Katz ousted from union leadership post

The Star-Ledger reports that CWA Local 1034 President and former Corzine girlfriend Carla Katz was removed from her post today after the union’s national leadership found that she misappropriate funds and violated federal labor laws.

According to a press release issued by the union, a temporary administrator has been appointed by the executive board “ in order to protect members’ dues, ensure compliance with federal and state law, the Union’s Constitution and the Local's Bylaws and restore union democracy.”

The rest of Local's board were also removed from their positions.

Local 1034 represents about 16,000 workers, most of whom are state employees. It is the largest of all of CWA’s locals.

"An extensive internal review revealed probable cause to believe that the local is engaged in ongoing financial malpractice, the misappropriation of union funds, a failure to comply with state and federal law, as well as the CWA constitution, and the suppression of dissent," read a press release from the national board. "The CWA national executive board has determined that it has no choice but to take this action to protect the rights and resources of the members of Local 1034."

According to the article, the release outlined a host of alleged wrongdoings by Katz during her tenure as president, including misappropriating funds to support her own reelection, authorizing over $700,000 in political donations, threatening and retaliating against union members who were critical of her, and failing to maintain time records to detail what she’s done as president.

Another Corrupt Corzine Crony!

So Carla Katz "misappropriated funds and violated federal labor laws" and was removed from her leadership position. I want to know when she'll be arrested! She needs to join the conga line of corruption. I hear Sharpe James and Wayne Bryant are holding a cell for her.

Three hots and a cot for Carla!

Was the money she got from Jon not enough?

How greedy can people be?

Oh, wait.....nevermind.

Funny as hell.....

....she is a ho and a crook.  The big question is, does she flip and turn rat on Corzine's dealings.....

its just politics

a Union finding probable cause that she violated Federal labor laws is not the same as a court of law and a jury finding her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

I'm not saying Carla Katz was any angel... but you have to believe there was some politics being played here on the national Union's side too.

"Katz is an unpaid columnist for PolitickerNJ.com." I bet she asks for pay now, unless the Gov gives her some more money. Seriously though, isn't misappropriating funds to support her own reelection the same as stealing? If so, why is she not arrested?

The Katz debacle

Katz is a political liability for Corzine and this won't go away now that she might actually have to work for a living unless a cushy job has already been guaranteed for her in the "private" sector with some "political" law firm.

The woman is an embarassment and goes to the core of why Corzine is a one-term failure.

Is this a joke, Wally come on!

Carla Katz was removed “in order to protect members’ dues, ensure compliance with federal and state law, the Union’s Constitution and the Local's Bylaws and restore union democracy.” Are we talking about unions or political parties? I do not get it. Even more "The CWA national executive board has determined that it has no choice but to take this action to protect the rights and resources of the members of Local 1034." Are these guys a joke or what? Carla Katz has done what: "including misappropriating funds to support her own reelection, authorizing over $700,000 in political donations, threatening and retaliating against union members who were critical of her, and failing to maintain time records to detail what she’s done as president." Really, these guys should remove themselves as well. Now let me get it straight, unions equals democracy? Do we live in the USA or what? We are in NJ, stupid.

The truth

Prior to her opposition to the state worker union contract Katz was given free reign and complete control of the CWA political apparatus in New Jersey. CWA leadership gladly let her do what she wanted and encouraged her to push the CWA agenda because she was without a doubt the most effective political operative in CWA.

But that all ended when she opposed the contract and worked against the CWA leadership and the other CWANJ Presidents.

They have been gunning for her ever since.

Vice President Chris Shelton, Political Director Bob Masters , and CWA 1040 President Carolyn Wade vowed to pay her back for her opposition.

Katz made some mistakes along the way and gave these people an opening. They waited until after the CWA National Convention to pull this " coup" .

They used their power to remove her but there is no justification for her removal. All of the things they said she did they either  knew of or approved.

This is all about petty jealousy and control of an organization that is completely losing its power and influence in New Jersey politics.

CWA has become a dysfunctional , second rate union that needs to hide behind other unions like the NJEA. Its leadership is filled with " little people " who are only concerned with their own well being and have little concern about the 55,000 members it represents.

Katz is no angel but she is not a crook. She is a tough, hard working union leader who sometimes  rubs peple the wrong way.

She is getting set up. That is the truth. The public is getting a rare inside look at the " dirty " part of Unions.

...and to those who truly believe in the need for Unions that is a real tragedy.

How About Chris Christie....

......investigating this one!

Either Katz is guilty of violating federal laws or the national union heads are guilty of "framing" an opponent for political advantage.

Of course, we shouldn't "hold our breath" waiting for Christie to do his job.

Right now, in the court of public opinion, this looks bad for Katz.

Keeping/reclaiming the job, at this point, is a tertiary consideration.

If Katz is innocent; I hope she aggressively fights these charges.

The legal system can take years to sort all this out. Again, IF she's innocent I suggest she hold a press conference and simply tells all and confronts the accusers head on.

the "e-mail"coup

There will be no " judge" in this internal case. By ousting her now the CWA will be able to have an internal " court" . Katz will have no say as to the composition of that court. The fix is in, that is why it is being done now.
The other reeason this has happened now is because of the infamous e-mails. In December of 2006 Corzine requested that the CWA strike a deal on the contract, that was not up until July 2007, before his budget address in late February 2007. CWA agreed and made a deal four months before the deadline . Katz was against that early deal. During the negotiations she had e-mail contact with Corzine , which will show that she opposed a settlement at that time. Those e-mails will be highly embarrassing , not necessarily to Corzine and Katz, but to the CWA leadership who had told their membership that they were fighting hard and negotiating hard for a new contract. That contract contained huge givebacks on both Health and pension benefits that allowed Corzine to state in his budget address that he was " holding the line" with stateworker unions. There definitely was no " hard fought" negotiations taking place four full months before the contract was up!

Even more than Corzine the CWA leadership team does not want those e-mails released. With Katz gone the whole argument of a Corzine Katz union leader/employer relationship is also gone. So it is hoped that those e-mails will never see the light of day, of it they do then the CWA leadership will simply say that they were initaited by a " corrupt" union official.

This is all about " inside" union political survival.

The unfortunate thing is that state workers , by law, have to pay dues to this banana republic union.

I condemn corruption and maleficent ineptitude across the board.

The problem is the SYSTEM! It's the way campaigns are financed that is at the heart of most of this.

100% public financing would reduce the power of the corporate/business sector and of the unions too!

Vis a vis the allegations against Katz, I say if they are true; then we have CRIMINAL violations of federal statutes!

If the national CWA is so sure of them selves they should present their evidence to Christie and he should go for a conviction!

The fact that they didn't go that route (and if they did; they should have let us all know in their press release, eh?) makes this smell like an inside political hit job designed to overthrow and discredit Katz.

Then again, if you construct a "frame" with enough people willing to perjure themselves and false documentation....you just might be able to put an innocent in prison......but if the frame fails, then the who business blows up and leaves the framers vulnerable to prosecutions.

So far, this is nothing but accusations, allegation and assertions answered by complete denials.

The fact that the union used it's "blunt instrument" of raw power to can the whole of Katz's team make sit seem all the more political. Were they all co-conspirators in a criminal enterprise?

The union could have simply said they didn't like the job she was doing and fired her. They didn't do that; they made allegations that, if true, could land Ms Katz in jail....and that takes this to a whole other level.

No doubt Katz is consulting with attorneys and advisors at this point....I hope that, if she is telling the truth and these charges are false, she holds a completely open press conference and lets it go on as long as it takes to air out the whole of her side of the story.

The job is almost irrelevant at this point (imho) this is about restoring her name, avoiding prosecution and turning the tables on those who (may) have falsely accused her.

Misappropriation of union funds is illegal. So is falsely accusing someone of same and firing them unjustly.

Eventually this will have to be sorted out by courts of law....not the spiritually penurious peanut gallery of petty partisans who persistently post in this place.

Someone is lying here. Either it's Katz or the national CWA. Whoever it is should wind up in jail (or at the losing end of a major civil suite) ....and I don't care if they're D's or R's.

Get it?

"key" to E-Mails

Who needs the courts to decide on the release of the katz/corzine emails?

Since the national CWA has locked up her office and has taken their equipment back, what is to stop them from going into the hard drive and read all the emails?

This will save NJ taxpayers lots of court costs and lawyer fees!

Time Out? Time In!

If the national CWA bosses had access to those emails (through their servers etc) and the contents were truly damaging to Katz, they would have been released a long long time ago.   LOL

For a deeper discussion of these matters check out huntsu's diary here http://www.bluejersey.net/showDiary.do?diaryId=8378#34979.

This is a small quote from my own recent comment there...

"At the risk of being accused of "jumping to conclusions" let me say that the pattern here is painfully obvious.

It seems clear that Katz is, very likely, the victim of an unfair and vindictive national "leadership" that is abusing it's powers in a desperate attempt to cover it's own collective ass.

There is no action that Katz can take to quickly fix/resolve this matter.  (Again, assuming that she is being treated unjustly.) So it's somewhat understandable that she would choose to remain publicly silent while allowing the legal processes to grind on.

On the other hand; in the (kangaroo) court of public opinion, she looks guilty as sin...especially given the whole e-mail controversy and the past personal relationship with the governor.

From a PR perspective, so far, the CWA head honchos are winning big.

It is my hope that Ms Katz make the decision to go public with a comprehensive press release/news conference in which she aggressively makes her case against her ostensible oppressors.    Of course that tactic only works in the context of a larger strategy to defend an innocent victim.

Such a tactic would lend encouragement and informational enlightenment to the broader CWA membership and it would "set the record straight" in the public eye.

Who knows?  Maybe there are no "good guys" in this mess?  Maybe everyone involved is  guilty of everything their opponents are accusing them of?   If that's the case; then this should end with the "mutually assured destruction" of Katz and the CWA national "leadership"."

Karma!

Mr. Democrat wrote "a Union finding probable cause that she violated Federal labor laws is not the same as a court of law and a jury finding her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt."

Karma Step 1--Katz' arrogance antagonizes even her own Union

Karma Step 2--indictments for violation of various State and federal labor laws

Karma Step 3--Katz forced to plea out because of overwhleming evidence

Karma Step 4--Katz refused admission to bar; 4 years of law school down the drain

Karma Step 5--Katz becomes a Walmart greeter and drives customers away in droves.

I love it when it all comes together!

Would that be anything like the press conference she called to "make disclosures" about Corzine? Unfortunately there's no greasy multi-millionaire with deep pockets and a guilty conscience ready to make a payoff to stop the press conference involved in Katz's misuse of Union funds so trying that money making scheme won't work this time. Just chickens coming home to roost. Katz has been skating on thin ice for years and she was bound to fall through sooner rather than later. The first clue that her ride was over was losing her run for national CWA office...by a 6-to-1 margin. She's got no constituency. But when she gets her JD she could be very popular doing motions for her cellblock gals.

Fortunately for the existing universe you are not the final arbiter for the operations of Karma or the Judgments of the Lord.

Like the rest of us, you are only entitled to your opinions, nothing more.

Time, and the courts, will tell if Katz is lying or if the national CWA "leadership" is lying.

Meanwhile, since you seem to have a thing for eastern philosophy; try doing some trancendental meditation and chill out a bit.
