The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has bumped Dennis Shulman up a rung on its priorities list.
The committee announced today that Shulman has moved up from being a “targeted race” to an “emerging race,” which means that Shulman is a contender to participate in the organization’s Red to Blue fundraising program.
“We’re excited that the DCCC is recognizing that in Dennis Shulman they have a special candidate and a special message,” said Shulman Campaign Manager Jeff Hauser, who was surprised by the announcement.”
Shulman remains a long-shot candidate, but he’s been getting some attention from the national party, which has been buoyed by three consecutive special election victories in traditionally Republican districts. He’s one of 20 candidates who were given the designation, 10-15 of whom may get significant financial support from the DCCC in the fall.

Surprise!
I am surprised too! I had no idea that there is this "Red to Blue fundraising program." How do we sign up? What is exactly “targeted race” and “emerging race”?

All running as so-called "moderates" that are "in touch" with Bergen voters.
The first three did not carry Bergen, and got killed elsewhere. No reason to believe this trend will change.
Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result???
If this seat were really competitive, Ferriero would put up a potential A-list candidate.

Actually, Arnie, Dennis Shulman Has a Fair Shot....
....at upsetting Scott Garrett.
Garrett's positions are extreme and ugly.
The only reason he "wins" is that he is perceived as some kind of "low tax" Republican and he has a strong base of fundamentalists that come out to vote for him.......and most of his constituents don't really know him.
I dare say, most normal/moderate NJ Republicans would wretch if they really knew what he stands for.
As for Boss Joe; he won't strongly/seriously back any Democrat in the 5th that he doesn't completely own. I don't seem to recall even Paul Aronsohn being very pleased with the level of BCDO support he received.....let alone the prior two more progressive candidates.
It's a shame that the Ferierro BCDO isn't willing to spend a couple of million bucks to elect a progressive and independent Democrat in that district. Boss Joe has access to the money.
Meanwhile, Shulman can win if he campaigns aggressively and works with the Obama initiative to register massive numbers of new voters in Democratic demographics.
In fact, that's a winning strategy throughout the state. If our governor, and the whole democratic NJ establishment, went all out and made it a goal to register an additional one or two hundred thousand new Democrats in NJ....that would go a long way toward some of these Republican incumbents being ousted in November. In that scenario Tom Wyka becoms a David with a slingshot.
A unified and electrified motivated energized excited Democratic party could ride some long Obama coat tails to victory in November.
The Republican congressmen who voted with George Bush on all his stupidly wasteful military and tax and environmental policies are all worthy of being retired this year.
Of course we now have the spectacle of NJ Republicans trying to run away from their prior support of Bush's perfideous agendas....except for Scott Garrett.
Garrett, you see, is even MORE of a right wing fanatic than Geroge Bush himself!!!
So, yes, Shulman can win IF our good Governor is willing to lead the NJ Democratic party in the direction of a populist revolt against the status quo.
The people of NJ, of both parties, are starving for real leadership and real fundamental change.

is dreaming. Congressman Garrett is first a great federal representative. He speaks his mind and breaks with the Republican party, politics be damned. Second he does represent the concerns of his district. The people of the 5th are satisfied with a smart conservative voice representing them in congress. The way the 5th is drawn brings together the most conservative portions of the state into one district. Sussex county will vote 5-1 in favor of the congressman. Lets be realistic here. Rabbi Shulman is not going to win. He lives in the wrong district. The same can be said about Tom Wyka. Tom Wyka is a nice guy, he really is, and if he lived in the 9th he would be a congressman. But the circumstances are such that Shulman, Wyka, and Zietz (running against Chris Smith in the 4th) are NOT GOING TO WIN. Lets call a spade a spade shall we?
