In the fifth congressional district, incumbent Republican E. Scott Garrett leads his potential challengers in fundraising.
Garrett raised $94,037.97 between April 1st and May 14th, bringing his total raised this cycle to $783,088.21 and his war chest of available cash to $508,523.31.
Dennis Shulman, the blind rabbi and psychologist who’s surprised many observers with his fundraising prowess– including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee – raised $33,990.10 during the same period, making his total raised so far $348,869.23. Shulman has $157,570.75 on hand, $35,000 of which comes from a personal loan.
Garrett remains the favorite to win in November, but in light of Shulman’s fundraising, the handicappers at Congressional Quarterly last month changed the district’s status from “safe Republican” to “Republican favored.”
Camille Abate, an attorney who’s competing with Shulman for the Democratic nomination, actually raised more than Shulman during the last period. She took in $39,787.33 and has raised $245,020.85 so far. But she lags far behind Shulman in cash on hand, with $48,836.19
