Multiple Republican sources say Andy Unanue is preparing to drop out of the Republican U.S. Senate race and will be replaced by former Congressman Dick Zimmer.
The arrangement is not final, but Unanue has reportedly agreed to drop his candidacy, while Zimmer has agreed to replace him.
Unanue’s three member committee on vacancies has until next Wednesday to officially change candidates.
Unanue could not be reached for comment, but Zimmer said that he has been contacted by several Republicans about the prospect and has agreed to run if he can count on a lot of support.
“I’ve received a number of phone calls from people who are interested in my running,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s a done deal, and I’ve said that if asked I would run. I’m proud of my record of accomplishment as a Congressman, and I would like to put it up against Frank Lautenberg’s… If the party feels that I should be the candidate I would accept it.”
Zimmer, who served three terms in the 12th district from 1991-1997, lives and works as a lawyer/lobbyist in Washington but maintains a farm in Delaware Township. He decided to forego reelection in 1996 to run a Senate campaign against Robert Toricelli, losing by 10 points.
He cautioned that he has not been formally offered the slot.
“I once said that there’s no such thing as a political draft, but I was wrong,” he said.
If he does wind up running, Zimmer will face state Sen. Joe Pennacchio and Ramapo College prof. Murray Sabrin in the June primary.
Neither candidate seemed thrilled with the possibility.
Pennacchio called Zimmer the "candidate du jour."
“Some people – and I don’t call them leaders because they hide behind their anonymity –think the process should be that you anoint a candidate. Whoever wants to come in has to come in at the very beginning," he said.
Sabrin's campaign spokesman, George Ajjan, also expressed some frustration that the party establishment couldn't settle on one of its two other candidates.
"The failed party bosses have finally reached the letter Z in their rolodex," he said.

Zimmer would be a great choice
But I think we are collectively worn out of who is running and who isn't. Time to put this to bed.
Dick was a great assemblyman, state senator, and congressman. He is one of the most honest politicians that I have known. The GOP should be proud to have him as the nominee.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!
If you were going to run the run. Why get in when you didn't think of it until some fatcats asked you.?
HA HA HA HA HA
Zimmer is the guy who lost to Rush Holt in 2000, BEFORE the redistricting and while Bush cruised to victory in the district.
Bring him on.
Zimmer
is hands down better than any of the three current candidates.
Zimmer has a lifetime rating
Zimmer has a lifetime rating of 68 from the American Conservative Union. This makes him less conservative over his career than John McCain.
Don't blow it Again!
Dick would make a wonderful Senator. But please, Dick, don't run the same campaign against Lautenberg that you did against Torricelli. Trying to tag Lautenberg as a "Liberal" like you tried to do against Torricelli isn't going to work in NJ. Show people how bright you are and give us more than cheap rhetoric.
Enough Already
Where was he when the GOP was begging candidates? Obviously he didn't want to run, so why bother now. Besides one has to ask how credible this is. Remember, sources say Unanue is out and then the sources said he was in. Sources said Crowley was in, then they said he was out. At this point it's Pennacchio unless Teddy Roosevelt gets in.
So much for there being a God
n/t
Please explain this to me...
Why jump into a race what you were not interested in before some GOP party "leaders" begged you to rather than focus on the candidates that they have?
As a Lobbyist he better disclose all of his ties or its game over for him too...
Teddy
I saw that too and loved it!
A Charade
This whole thing has been a disgrace. Thank goodness 99.99% of NJ has no idea that all this nonsense is going on with Unanue because it has been an embarassment. Enought with the Unanue hokey-pokey -- he's in, he's out, he's in. . . -- just drop-out already.
When is Wilson's term up as state GOP leader?
"A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have.” - Thomas Jefferson
I am tired of it!
It is the economy stupid and finances, stupid.
Re Weil
"It is the economy stupid and finances, stupid."
Dick Zimmer was ranked the most fiscally responsible/conservative member of Congress every year in Congress, won the Taxpayer Hero Award....what has Murray done to reduce our tax burden, besides taking a government-paid salary?
The man who gave us Torricelli
Zimmer is a horrible candidate who had his chance and blew a sure thing race to Bob Torricelli by ten points. Then he blew another sure thing by losing to Rush Holt in 2000. Why? Because Zimmer's legislative focus moved from cutting spending to a strange fixation with the abortion issue.
Even many abortion supporters don't go as far as Zimmer, one of the few Republicans to endorse Partial Birth Abortion and the Roe v. Wade decision which legalizes abortion up to and including the day of delivery.
Look it up. You won't find anyone who served in Congress with a more pro-abortion record than Dick Zimmer.
Coupled with his advocacy for gun control laws, there is little reason to think that this has been has any rationale for his candidacy other than to satisfy his insatiable ego and obsessive lust for power.
Pathetic
Zimmer lost by more than Kean, Forrester and Franks. He is not appealing at all to the Northeast Corridor, only Sabrin has a chance of winning there. This is a pathetic last gasp stunt.
Rick...
In all fairness, it was Mike Pappas who lost the seat to Holt originally, not Zimmer.
And Pappas was a strong Conservative..
Ha
Sabrin couldn't even win his home county during the primary. No way he wins it in the fall.
Zimmer??? Is this some kind of sick joke???
Dickie Z is a non-starter. I wasted way too much of my time trying to get this yutz elected against Toricelli. One of the worst candidates I've ever seen. He may be the only GOP candidate that Lautenberg could actually out-campaign.
It's as simple as ABZ - Anybody But Zimmer.
Where are my beans?
And I thought that we finally are going to get free cans of beans as part of Andy "the bean " Unanue's campaign. However, it is not to be, because he has no desire to run at all. What a shame!
Anymore want in?
As soon as we dig him out of our couches, they are trapped in there with the loose change.
Not only does the GOP brass want to go back in time, they want to go back to the really awful time.
Wally is making up stuff again.
Next it will be Mike Ferguson or Dick LaRosa.
Hey Mountaintop
If you're going to discuss the abortion issue, at least do so accurately. Roe v. Wade does not as you say, "legalizes abortion up to and including the day of delivery." While it does allow women the right to make their own decisions regarding their preganancies, it does not allow for abortions to be performed "the day of delivery". Where do you get your so-called "facts", Marie Tasey?
Zimmer's extreme pro-abortion view
There are no abortions prohibited under Roe v. Wade. Partial Birth Abortions, which Zimmer enthusiastically supported as a member of Congress, are permitted because of Roe v. Wade. Can you name any abortions not permitted thanks to this most ridiculous Supreme Court decision that Zimmer so slavishly supports.
And Eric, Zimmer lost to Rush Holt. The same people supporting his candidacy today were the same ones telling Republicans that Zimmer "couldn't lose" the race against Holt. In fact, had Pappas been the nominee in 2000, he probably would have won the seat back. His 1998 margin of defeat, in a horrible GOP year, was not so big as to think Pappas was a permanently damaged candidate. It's too bad he didn't seek the 7th District seat this year.
The bottom line is that Dick Zimmer has the one qualification he needs to be endorsed by our state party "leaders" and that is his sick fixation with supporting as many abortions as possible, funded by the taxpayers and -- the truth is the truth -- up to and including the day of delivery.
You all remember Mike Pappas?
He was the guy Shaftan wrote that catchy tune...Twinkle Twinkle Kenneth Starr...that he performed on the floor of the house. Rick did a great job on gettting him re-elected.
Rick..
I honestly did not know that you were involved with Pappas's campaign.
And I knew Zimmer lost to Rush Holt, but I was saying it was Pappas who originally lost the seat.
Mike Pappas.
Out of tune. Out of touch.
OK Dick Zimmer is an improvement,
however, as noted above, he is not the best campaigner.
Suggestion to Dick Z or his campaign. Major issues against Frank Lautenberg can be his votes against FISA and against John Doe amendment.
Roe's Effective Abortion on Demand
Under Roe v. Wade, in practice an abortion can be performed at any time prior to birth. In the event a woman's physician determines that a woman's mental or physical health is at risk, an abortion can be performed regardless of viability. Even gruesome procedures such as partial birth abortions are allowed up until the last moment. Liberal icon Richard Cohen wrote a remarkable article titled "Mea Culpa on Partial Birth Abortion" several years ago. Anyone who doubts what I say should read Cohen's piece. It is shocking.
As for Zimmer, he voted against overriding Clinton's veto of a bill banning partial birth abortion on September 19, 1996. I could never support someone who can find it within his heart to abide de facto infanticide.
And let's not forget Dick's "portraits in courage" moment when he voted against the GOP's budget plan to avoid takintg heat from the Torch during their Senate race. Dick stabbed his colleagues in the back at a crucial moment when character -- or in Zimmer's case, a lack thereof -- was ripe to be revealed.
MoutainTop and MartinTwo For Lautenberg
if you are angry at Zimmer for his position on abortion or a meaningless budget vote cast 12 years ago, vote for Lautenberg in the general (or stay home which is still a vote for Lautenberg).
If you want to see a fiscal conservative, strong ethics New Jersey Republican in the US Senate, then support Dick Zimmer.
it's really as simple as that.
Strong ethics
By definition, anyone who aids and abets partial birth abortion lacks "ethics".
As for the "meaningless" budget vote, this was Dick's Alamo moment. When the heat was on and the bird was in the oven, Dick metaphorically exited the kitchen and drove over to the pick-up window at Mickey D's to grab a Big Mac. This constitutes a clear lack of conviction to principle, which I find unacceptable in a candidate.
Being a professional lobbyist, Dick already knows his way around K Street. At least he won't need a map.
Mike P.
We worked with him in 96 and again for a little bit in 2000.
Zimmer?!?!?!?
He lost to Holt in his own district (I live in it). There is no hope to win this seat. I still don't know who I am going to vote for. I think I will write in myself in the primary or maybe I will calm down and vote for Jersey joe...
It is too late for Zimmer.
Irregardless, who this guy is the fact is that he found himself in the race (or will be in a moment) so late in the process that it tells you a lot about who he is and where he stands in terms of respect for the GOP primaries. I do not want to mention the respect for rank and file Republicans.
The establishment Republicans really know how to screw up simple things.
Republican leadership ?
This is the very behavour that gives the Republicans a bad name.
Like him or not Jersey joe has won the respect of the rank and file in the party. It seems more than Ironic that the folks who cry " its my party too" and protect the so called 11th Commandment have no trouble overturning conventions, extending deadlines, and throwing legitimate hardworking candidates under the bus. I respect Joe because he has a great work ethic who will give Lautenberg a good fight. The rank and file will vote in June be ready for the backlash
So does Dr. Sabrin.
Bergenite, so does Murray. Let's face the facts.
Nice Quote, Wrong Attribution
That quote is from Gerald Ford, not Thomas Jefferson. Confusing the two is kind of ... sad.
Especially since Jefferson was responsible for dramatically increasing the government's activitiy, though no Republican will admit that. His ratcheting up of the Navy and war against the Barbary states dramatically increased federal taxes on states (not individuals, but states) and the federal power on the seas.
bitaryo - Ferguson may have a chance
For all that he was challenged last time, as a statewide candidate he may not be so bad for Senate. He's fairly moderate on the environment and civil rights, at least for a DeLay Repblican, and could claim the Conservative Right Wing Christian vote.
Fedupnj It is you who need
Fedupnj It is you who need to get the facts. Mountaintop and Martin Two are absolutely right. Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton legalized abortion for the entire nine months of pregnancy if the mother's "health" is at stake. Health has been defined by the Court in the context of abortion to be any reason - "emotional, psychological, familial and the women's age - all factors relevant to her well being." If you would like more information on the abortion issue, please let me know.
Zimmer has run a couple of
Zimmer has run a couple of dirtiest campaigns in NJ history. If he is considered ethical in this state, no wonder so many people want to leave. The last thing we need is another lobbyist representing NJ in D.C. Can the Pubs standards get any lower. This is embarassing. At least the momma's boy from NY was entertaining. Zimmer is BORING!
Chris Smith, where are you?
Pro-choice
Zimmer being pro-choice and voting against the partial birth abortion ban while in Congress really turns me off.
I'm not going to vote for him in the primary, but I would still vote for him over Lautenberg in a general election.
Why Not Just be done with it ...
Why don't the Wilson/ Kryllos/Ortiz types be done with it and nominate Wally Edge (the original one). He's only been dead for half a century. And he hasn't taken a position against abortion which will make them happy.
I have seen enough to know that I have seen too much.....
The Honorable Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States
I didn't think I could ever be around to see the day when Dick Zimmer, who lost at 8:01 p.m., a minute after the polls closed to Bob Toricelli, would be the standardbearer for the Republican party and their hope for the US Senate seat this fall.
GOP = Losers. Haven't beens and never will be's with Wilson and Kyrillos as their spokespeople. Please save everyone's time and money and don't put up a candidate. What an embarassment this has turned out to be.
Oh great . . .what a retarded failcopter this guy is
Sabrin and the Paultardz are gonna love this . . .
This wimp makes that fail Sabrin actually look good.
