Leecia Eve, a footnote to political history

And for true political junkies, how’s this for a Loser of the Week nomination: Leecia Eve, who was supposed to be the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 2006 – until Eliot Spitzer decided he didn’t want her.
Eve served as Hillary Clinton’s Legislative Counsel in the U.S. Senate before entering the race for Lt. Governor in 2005. She secured key endorsements – including the so-called Harlem Clubhouse: Rep. Charles Rangel, former Mayor David Dinkins, and former Secretary of State Basil Paterson, David Paterson’s father. Spitzer’s decision to pick Paterson, the Senate Minority Leader, over Eve caused a huge problem for the Harlem Democrats, who were close to Eve’s father, Arthur Eve, a powerful Buffalo Democrat and former Assembly Deputy Speaker.
Spitzer had considerable gravitas back then and got his way. Eve dropped out of the race (in New York, primary voters cast separate votes for Governor and Lt. Governor and general election voters cast a single ballot for both offices) and Spitzer got his way.
Eve is now working full time as an advisor to Clinton’s presidential campaign, but had she held on to her onetime front runner status, she would be five days away from her inauguration as the Governor of New York.
