LANCE DENOUNCES FALSE, NEGATIVE ADS
ON BEHALF OF LINDA STENDER
-- Calls on Stender to State Her Position On Partial-Birth Abortion; Parental Notification --
GREEN BROOK, NJ - Seventh District congressional candidate Leonard Lance today denounced the latest negative television advertisement benefiting his opponent Linda Stender.
In the latest national Democratic Congressional Committee advertisement on behalf of Linda Stender, Lance is criticized for voting against the procedure known as, "partial-birth abortion" and in favor of parental notification when a minor tries to obtain an abortion. The ad says these votes "restricted a woman's right to choose" and calling Lance, "too extreme for New Jersey."
"My votes against partial-birth abortion and for parental notification are not ‘radical' or ‘extreme' positions," Lance said. "My positions are in line with a large majority of New Jersey voters. My opponent Linda Stender should be ashamed these ads are running on her behalf. Assemblywoman Stender knows full well that I am pro-choice. These ads are false and Linda Stender should denounce them immediately."
Specifically, the ad targets two measures:
A527, 6/24/99 -- Requires parental notification of an abortion performed on a minor.
A2409, 5/8/97 -- Prohibits partial-birth abortions except when necessary to save the life of the mother.
Both A527 and A2409 passed overwhelmingly in the State Legislature. New Jersey voters favored by 72-24 percent to require parental notification before a minor receives an abortion. And 80 percent of voters said late term or "partial birth" abortions should be illegal except to save the life of the mother (Quinnipiac University poll, 6/10/99).
"What voters want to know is: does Linda Stender support the partial-birth abortion procedure? Does Linda Stender oppose parental notification laws that involve a parent in the decision of whether a minor has an abortion? It's shameful Assemblywoman Stender is benefiting from this ad and says nothing," Lance concluded.
