LAMPITT PRAISES TEEN DRIVER STUDY CONCLUSIONS;
WILL SEEK TO TURN RECOMMENDATIONS INTO LAW
(VOORHEES) - Assemblywoman Pamela R. Lampitt today welcomed the final report of the Teen Driver Study Commission by pledging to work with legislative colleagues to enact new laws that will make New Jersey's roads safer for all motorists.
Lampitt (D-Camden) is sponsor of legislation (A-637) to require holders of learner's permits and provisional driver's licenses to display special tags and stickers on their vehicles and a bill (A-643) that would institute fines for provisional drivers caught carrying more than one passenger, the limit under current law.
Tougher sanctions against teen drivers exceeding passenger limits and developing external automobile identifiers for new drivers are among the Commission's recommendations.
The Assemblywoman released the following statement:
"Making our roads safer for teen drivers will ultimately make New Jersey safer for all motorists.
"The recommendations released today are common-sense changes that would give real teeth to the graduated driver's license system and send the strong message to teens that driving is a privilege, not a right.
"Teens must understand that being handed the keys to the family car carries with it real and tremendous responsibility.
"These recommendations must be put into action as soon as possible, before another young life is senselessly and unnecessarily lost behind the wheel."
