Green and Stender: Is There a Tax You Don’t Like?

District 22 Legislators are Nothing More Than Rubber Stamps for Corzine

Scotch Plains - Former Scotch Plains Mayor Martin Marks and businessman William "Bo" Vastine want to ask their opponents, career politicians Jerry Green and Linda Stender, one simple question: Is there a tax that you won't support?

Marks and Vastine asked this question in response to an article in today's Business Section of The Star-Ledger, titled "Jersey ranks 50th, again, for tax climate".  In the article, New Jersey was reported to have the worst business tax climate in the nation for the second year in a row, according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation.

"Every time you turn around, Governor Corzine and his rubber stamps, Jerry Green and Linda Stender, are there imposing a new tax on small businesses and individuals. Linda Stender and Jerry Green have voted to raise taxes and fees in our state by $6.4 billion and $8.6 billion, respectively." Marks continued, "It would be great if Green and Stender voted in the interests of their constituents and not those of Governor Corzine."

Since career politicians Jerry Green and Linda Stender have been in office, they've voted in favor of several taxes and fees that make doing business in New Jersey unaffordable. The following taxes are a sample of how small businesses and middle class taxpayers have suffered under Green and Stender's tax hikes:

  • Sales Tax Rate Increase: $1.2 billion
  • Corporation Business Tax Increase: $1 billion
  • Payroll Tax Increase: $400 million
  • Sales Tax on Flooring and Carpet Installation: $9 million

"As a businessman, I've watched in amazement at the taxes Green and Stender have imposed on businesses in our state. Before the current recession occurred, jobs were leaving our state for friendlier tax climates in Pennsylvania, now they are leaving in an exodus and Green and Stender have done nothing." Vastine continued, "With unemployment reaching close to 10 percent and over 150,000 jobs lost, when will they stand up to the Governor and say "no" to more taxes."
