Mount Holly, October 8, 2008—Career Trenton politician John Adler’s vote to repeal the death penalty – even for convicted cop killers, terrorists and pedophiles who murder a child in the commission of a sex crime – put him far out of the mainstream in the 3rd Congressional District, and prove his tough talk about killing terrorists overseas is just more hypocrisy from a desperate candidate running from his record in Trenton, charged decorated combat veteran and job-creating businessman Chris Myers (NJ-3).
On December 10, 2007, Adler voted to abolish capital punishment in New Jersey (P.L. 2007, c. 204, formerly S-171, passed the Senate 21-16) and overturning past jury verdicts by commuting the sentences of death row inmates to life imprisonment. Adler then went a step further by voting against a motion by Senator Leonard Lance to amend the death penalty bill to keep the death penalty for three classes of murderers: (1) persons who kill law enforcement officers; (2) persons who kill children in the commission of sex crimes; and (3) terrorists who commit mass murder. The motion to table passed by a vote of 20-14. Senator Adler is recorded as voting “Yes,” preventing the Senate from voting on the Lance amendment.
“Violent criminals convicted of murdering a police officer, killing innocent citizens in a terrorist attack, or brutally murdering a child in the commission of a sex crime deserve to be put to death,” said Myers, who believes New Jersey should reinstitute the death penalty as a punishment for convicted murderers.
Myers also blasted Adler’s tough talk about killing terrorists overseas – particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan – as more hypocrisy given his vote to protect those very same terrorists from the death penalty here in New Jersey.
“The King of Hypocrisy strikes again,” said Myers, who released a YouTube video showing debate excerpts of Adler saying America needs to kill terrorists overseas. “Again Senator Adler is taking two different sides of the same issue. He needs to explain to voters why it’s OK to give terrorists the death penalty overseas, but it’s not OK to give them the death penalty in New Jersey if they kill our citizens? This is just another example of career Trenton politician John Adler being willing to say anything to get elected, even if it is in complete contrast with positions he held less than a year before.”
