Just Resign, Sonny!
(Linwood, NJ) – Second district Democrats blasted State Senator and Egg Harbor Township Mayor James "Sonny" McCullough (R-LD 2) for promoting an immediate ban on dual office holding while refusing to hold himself to that very same standard. Senator McCullough, who became a dual office-holder on February 20th, voted for a bill today that he claims didn't go far enough. McCullough continues to hold two offices himself, despite proposing a bill that calls for an immediate ban on the practice of dual office holding.
"It is sheer hypocrisy for Senator McCullough to say one thing about this very important issue and do another. Either he is for dual office holding or against it. He can't have it both ways. He can't say that he opposes dual office holding while at the same time keeping two offices for himself. How hypocritical can you get!" said Whelan's senate campaign manager Raiyan Syed.
"Senator McCullough and the GOP leadership sent the wrong message to New Jerseyan's that dual office holding is acceptable by allowing McCullough to take the oath to a second office on the same day the senate was scheduled to vote to end the practice. And now they are disingenuously trying to pass themselves off as reformers.
"Will Republicans in the State Senate call out McCullough and force him to step down from one of his two seats, or will they return to business as usual and look the other way while grandstanding on the issue," said Syed. "It's time for the GOP to put its money where its mouth is. If they are truly serious about an immediate ban, then Minority Leader Lance and his colleagues should stand up and challenge their newest member to do what's right by stepping aside immediately.
In a press release on June 20, Senator McCullough said, "I believe in fairness. The law should apply to everyone…McCullough added he saw no practical reason why current members of the Legislature should not step down from their local offices to serve full time as State Senators or Assembly members." "It's pretty simple. Senator McCullough can heed our call, and step down as Mayor of Egg Harbor Township immediately. Or he can continue to serve his own personal interests by holding two offices. What will it be Senator?"
