DEMOCRATIC ASSEMBLY MAJORITY ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP FOR 214TH SESSION

Oliver Elected First African-American Woman Speaker; Cryan Elected Majority Leader

(TRENTON) - Assembly Democrats today issued a multimedia package on the election of new legislative leaders for the 214th Legislature.

The Democratic caucus elected Assemblywoman Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex) to the position of Speaker, the first African American woman to ever hold the post, and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) to the position of Majority Leader.  The new leaders will be formally sworn in during the chamber's January 12 reorganization.
