(TRENTON) - Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo today issued a multimedia package on his legislation to create a "Silver Alert" system in New Jersey to notify the public about missing persons who are believed to be suffering from dementia or other cognitive impairments.
The legislation (A-2844) is based on the state's successful "Amber Alert" system, used by state police to locate missing or abducted children. The system would be a voluntary, cooperative effort between state and local law enforcement agencies and the broadcast media. Upon notification by the state police, broadcast media would transmit an emergency alert to inform the public of the disappearance of an elderly person or a younger person suffering from a cognitive impairment, like autism.
The multimedia package consists of a video press release on the legislation, audio of same and a transcript of DeAngelo's statement.
The video can be accessed directly via our Web site - www.assemblydems.com - or by clicking here.
The audio file is available upon request.
A transcript of DeAngelo's (D-Mercer) statement is appended below:
"For most aging New Jersey residents, entering their 'golden years' brings a chance to enjoy the fruits of decades of labor and planning.
"Unfortunately for some elderly residents, growing older also means confronting and coping with life-changing afflictions like Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
"These afflictions affect the mind and can sometimes cause elderly residents to wander away, putting themselves at serious risk, and causing undue stress for caregivers and family members.
"To help protect these vulnerable residents from harm and reunite them safely with their families, we have introduced legislation - A-2844 - to create a 'Silver Alert' system in New Jersey.
"The Silver Alert system would be based on the state's "Amber Alert" system, which has been successfully used by State Police to locate children who go missing.
"The Silver Alert system would create a cooperative effort between state and local law enforcement and broadcast media to inform residents whenever an elderly person disappears.
"The alerts would include a description of the missing elderly person as well as how people with information on the individual can contact law enforcement. And they would create a proven safety net to help protect our most vulnerable senior residents.
"For more information about the Silver Alert system, or for help with any other questions you may have, feel free to contact my district offices by phone or e-mail."
The Assembly passed the measure in March. It is now awaiting further consideration in the Senate.
