Cryan: Court Ruling Upholding Payout Limits for School Administrators a Win for Taxpayers

Assembly Democrats News Release

CRYAN:  COURT RULING UPHOLDING PAYOUT LIMITS FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS A WIN FOR TAXPAYERS

(TRENTON) - Assemblyman Joseph Cryan today called a ruling by a New Jersey appeals court upholding state Department of Education Commissioner Lucille Davy's ability to limit sick and vacation time payouts for departing school administrators "a win for the taxpayers of the State of New Jersey."

Cryan is the sponsor of legislation (A-2975) that would prohibit school superintendents, assistant superintendents and school business administrations who leave their jobs - whether by retirement or other means - from earning any payment except for legally allowable buy-backs of unused sick leave and vacation time.

The measure stems from the case of retiring Keansburg schools chief Barbara Trzeszkowski, who was supposed to be paid a $556,290 retirement bonus calculated by multiplying her current monthly salary by the more than 38 years of service in the district on top of $184,586 for more than 250 unused sick and vacation days.

Cryan (D-Union) issued the following statement:

"Wednesday's ruling reinforces what we've been saying all along - that taxpayer dollars meant to educate children in the classroom should not be diverted to finance outgoing school administrators' diamond-encrusted retirement nest eggs.

"Commissioner Davy now has the legal support to limit excessive school administrator retirement packages.  And New Jersey taxpayers now have one more assurance that the money we spend on educating our children will actually be used for that purpose."
