(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Joan M. Quigley and Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman today issued a multimedia package on their legislation – signed into law by Governor Jon S. Corzine – making it illegal to purchase more than one handgun a month in New Jersey.
New Jersey is the fourth state to place such restrictions on handgun purchases, behind Virginia, Maryland, and California.
Under the law, a person who possesses a handgun purchaser permit is prohibited from buying more than one handgun in New Jersey per calendar month. Retail firearms dealers are also prohibited from knowingly selling more than one handgun to any particular person in a calendar month.
Law enforcement officers and agencies, licensed retail dealers and licensed firearms collectors all are exempted from the purchasing restriction.
The multimedia package consists of a video press release on the bill signing, audio of same and a transcript of statements from the sponsors.
The video can be accessed directly via our Web site – www.assemblydems.com – or by clicking here.
The audio file is available upon request.
A transcript of sponsor statements is appended below:
Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer):
“Basically it is a law that helps to protect the safety and the security of the innocent children and people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Assemblywoman Joan M. Quigley (D-Hudson):
“The world has changed. People who had arguments with one another only a few years ago would get in fights and give each other a black eye. Now they pull out a gun and they shoot each other, and unfortunately, they shoot the bystanders. This can’t be. We have to change this. This is not the wild west of the old movies. This is civilized New Jersey. We need to protect our citizens.”
Watson Coleman:
“We may not be able to stop evil people from doing evil things all the time but we can make it difficult for them to do them in the state of New Jersey.”
Quigley:
“So the Legislature had to act. It took us a while but we acted and I think the people of New Jersey will be pleased.”
