(JERSEY CITY) - Assemblywoman Joan M. Quigley (D-Hudson) today issued a multimedia package focusing on the recent rash of bedbug infestations in apartment buildings across the state and the legislation she is crafting to ensure that the responsibilities for extermination of the vermin are clearly delineated.
The multimedia package consists of a video op-ed on the topic, audio of same, and a copy of the script, as delivered.
The video op-ed can be accessed directly via our Web site, www.assemblydems.com, or by clicking here.
The audio file is available upon request.
The script is appended below:
"Bedbugs.
"Tiny bloodsucking insects that live and breed in bedding and other fabrics.
"The very thought of anyone having to live with bugs feeding on them as they sleep is enough to make my skin crawl.
"Yet, a growing number of New Jersey renters are being forced to do just that, thanks to unclear state laws.
"While current law states that landlords are responsible for providing needed extermination, it does not prohibit them from turning around and charging tenants for the cost of the extermination.
"These exterminations frequently require several treatments, each of which can carry a price tag of more than $300.
"More and more, renters that cannot afford to absorb the cost of a proper extermination are choosing instead to simply ignore the problem, which only makes the situation worse.
"The situation is, quite frankly, intolerable.
"Fortunately, the solution is a simple one: change the law.
"I am sponsoring legislation that would require landlords of multi-unit buildings in New Jersey to provide and pay for all needed exterminations.
"Tenants should not have to pay extra simply to live in a clean and safe environment.
"For more information about this legislation, or for help with any other questions you may have, feel free to contact my district office by phone or e-mail."
