(PERTH AMBOY) - Immediately following Governor Jon S. Corzine's enactment of S-1557/A-2624 - legislation that significantly expands New Jersey's FamilyCare program and creates health coverage mandates for children - Assemblyman Neil M. Cohen (D-Union), a prime sponsor of the measure and a staunch advocate for health care reform, issued the following statement:
"Today, we have succeeded in protecting the health and wellbeing of the state's most vulnerable residents.
"The expansion of our FamilyCare program provides access to affordable health care to tens of thousands of New Jersey families for the first time - families that previously had to rely on not getting sick as their only means of health insurance.
"And providing universal health coverage for children ensures that future generations will grow up healthy and strong.
"Furthermore, our actions today have helped set the stage for a broader discussion on universal health care access in New Jersey. Because access to quality, affordable health care options should be a right, not a privilege."
