Democrats Get Cleary Fired
Republicans Continue to Call Issue “Administrative”
OCEAN TWP – Amy Mallet (D-Fair Haven) and Glenn Mason (D-Hazlet) were successful in their call for the ousting of Assistant County Counsel James Cleary. Cleary was fired this week after a constant barrage from the Democrats calling on him to step down. Freeholder candidates Mallet and Mason also requested the County Prosecutor and the Attorney General investigate Mr. Cleary’s activities at the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA). Mr. Cleary received $165,000 in unauthorized pension and health benefits while at the WMUA to which he was not entitled to.
“This is why my running mate and I decided to run for Freeholder – to do what the Republicans won’t – represent the taxpayers of Monmouth County,” said Mallet. The Democrats began calling for an investigation immediately after the issue came to light and Director Lillian Burry referred to the criminality of the issue as “an administrative matter.”
“The people of Monmouth County have now seen the true character of both parties – the Democrats will represent the people and the Republicans will only represent their cronies,” said Mallet. Cleary, in addition to his role at the WMUA and the County, has been deeply entrenched with both the Marlboro and Monmouth County Republican parties for decades.
In a statement on Tuesday, Director Burry continued her mantra of defending Republican political appointee James Cleary by again referring to the issue as “administrative.” “The Republicans are out of touch. They actually believe that when $165,000 goes missing on their watch that no one should be held accountable,” said Mason. “Director Burry would rather defend a friend than represent the people of this county – that is why it’s time for a change,” said Mason.
Mallet and Mason attended a meeting of the WMUA railing against the Republicans for refusing to remove Mr. Cleary and demanding an investigation. It was only due to the persistence and vigilance of the Democrats that this issue came to resolution for the people of Monmouth County. Director Burry came to her senses on this issue for political reasons not the right reasons
