Democrats’ Statement at the WMUA
Mallet & Mason Call for Investigation; Say Republicans are Protecting Political Appointees Over Public Interest
OCEAN TWP – Amy Mallet (D-Fair Haven) and Glenn Mason (D-Hazlet) spoke at the meeting of the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA) Thursday night calling on the authority to investigate the activities of Mr. Cleary. They issued the following statement:
“Mr. Cleary took $165,000 of the ratepayers’ money to which he was not entitled. When an amount of money that large is taken by someone who’s not entitled to it, it demands a criminal investigation.
Rather than stand with the ratepayers of Marlboro and Manalapan, Freeholder Burry has rewarded Cleary’s improper behavior by paying him $184,000 as Assistant County Counsel just last year. Freeholder Burry is defending a Republican-appointee at the expense of the ratepayers of Marlboro and Manalapan.
Returning the money is simply not enough. You don’t get to rob the bank and give the money back when you’re caught and expect all to be forgiven. Working families in Monmouth County struggle every day to make ends meet– they shouldn’t have to pay for the benefits of a retired Republican political appointee who isn’t entitled to these benefits.”
