A Corzine win makes Menendez safe safe safe

A win by Jon Corzine will make Democrat Robert Menendez one of the safest incumbents in the United States Senate when he seeks re-election in 2012.  Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey since 1972 and have had no statewide victories since 1997, and if the GOP can't take out a governor with upside-down approval ratings, it's unlikely that they will be seriously competitive against Menendez in a presidential year.  Menendez, who has taken a personal interest in Corzine's Hudson County campaign, will appear with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show tonight to plug his new book.

It's been 32 years since a Democratic governor won re-election

If Jon Corzine wins, he will become the sixth Governor of New Jersey to win re-election; if he loses, he'll become just the third governor in state history to lose re-election.  Republican William Cahill lost a primary in 1973, and Democrat James Florio lost the 1993 general election. Corzine would also become the first Democratic Governor to win a second term since Brendan Byrne did it 32 years ago.

If Christopher Christie wins, he will become the first Republican to win a statewide election in New Jersey in twelve years; since Christine Todd Whitman won a second term in 1997, 49 other states have elected a Republican to statewide office.  Christie would become the first former U.S. Attorney to win statewide since Garret Wall won a U.S. Senate seat in 1835.

Control of Freeholder boards at stake in four counties

Control of the Board of Freeholders is at stake in Atlantic, Burlington, Monmouth and Salem counties.

Republicans currently have a 6-3 majority in Atlantic, and are defending three seats tomorrow.  Democrats need to win two of the three to take control.  In Burlington, the GOP has a 3-2 majority and two of their incumbents are not seeking re-election; Democrats need to win one of the two to control county government. Democrats have a 5-2 majority in Salem County, where two Democratic seats are up; Republicans need to win them both.

Last year, Democrats captured control of the Monmouth Freeholder board for the first time in twenty years and now have a 3-2 majority.  Incumbent Democrat Barbara McMorrow is not seeking re-election; the GOP is running John Curley, a former Red Bank Councilman who narrowly lost last year, faces Democrat Sean Byrnes, a Middletown Township Committeeman.  The winner of that race will decide control.

New polls?

There is no confirmation yet, but watch for two new polls to come out today: Rasmussen Reports, and WABC-TV/SurveyUSA.  Both polls typically offer fresh data on the Monday before Election Day, and both have been carefully monitoring the New Jersey gubernatorial race.

Meet Jeff Chiesa, who is in a statistical dead heat to being one of the most powerful people in New Jersey

If Christopher Christie wins the race for governor tomorrow, look for Jeffrey Chiesa to become an extraordinarily powerful man in New Jersey politics.  Christie's longtime friend could find himself on short lists for Chief of Staff, Counsel to the Governor, and Attorney General.

The 44-year-old Chiesa and Christie were law partners at Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci and went to the U.S. Attorney's office together in 2002.  Chiesa served as Chief of the Public Protection Unit, as Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, and as Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney.  He prosecuted former Senate President John Lynch and Harry Parkin, who was Mercer County Executive Robert Prunetti's Chief of Staff.

Chiesa, who let the U.S. Attorney's office last year, has been on the inner circle of the campaign for governor.

Secretary of State Pinkett?

If Gov. Jon Corzine wins re-election, look for former reality TV star Dr. Randal Pinkett to be on the short list of candidates for Secretary of State.  Corzine came close to picking Pinkett to run for Lt. Governor last summer, and the Franklin business executive and Ph.D. has been working hard for the campaign as Chairman of Yes We Can 2.0, a GOTV operation of the state Democratic Party.  Nina Mitchell Wells is expected to leave her post in January.

Stick a fork in Chris Daggett

Bad news so far today for independent gubernatorial candidate Christopher Daggett: two new polls today having him just barely above the double digit mark as he rapidly hemorrhages 24 hours before voting begins.  The Quinnipiac poll has his favorables at 23%-17% -- nearly six out of ten New Jerseyans likely to vote on Tuesday (57%) still don't know who he is.  He's out of money, and has no party structure to turn out votes on Election Day.

Obama's N.J. visit

President Barack Obama's two New Jersey appearances in support of Gov. Jon Corzine today will remind voters that the two share a partisan affiliation in a state where there are 700,000 more Democrats than Republicans.  In a race that is too close to call - and with Republican Christopher Christie holding a commanding lead among the state's 2.4 million unaffiliated voters, Corzine must win his base vote big to win a second term.  That's why Obama has been here twice in recent weeks, along with Bill Clinton and Joseph Biden.

As expected, Obama drew big crowds in North and South Jersey.  The event at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden may have been ill-timed: the Walt Whitman Bridge and several major roadways were shut down around the same time New Jerseyans were traveling to Philadelphia for the Giants/Eagles game.

A presidential visit caps a great month for the Prudential Center, which appears to have a deal to bring the Nets to Newark and a peace accord with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.  Obama's route from Newark Liberty Airport to downtown did not appear to inconvenience other parts of the state, and Penn Station was packed on a Sunday - a good sign for Mayor Cory Booker.
