Bergen County Republican Sheriff candidate Harry Shortway Jr. today announced that upon his election in November he will immediately act to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorizing county officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions, pursuant to Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
"The status quo is ridiculous. Illegal means illegal," said Shortway. "If you want to get serious about law enforcement, then vote column 2 on November 6th. Vote for me because I will deal with this problem."
Speaking from a lifetime of law enforcement experience, Shortway added, " I can't tell you how many times, as a detective, I called Immigration only to find them overtaxed and unable to respond. But that doesn't have to be the case, not on my watch. By deputizing our officers as immigration officers, the 70 municipal jurisdictions within Bergen County can call the Sheriff when they need immigration enforcement authority. The cross-designation with ICE will provide the necessary resources to pursue investigations relating to violent crimes and foreign gang activity. I don't understand why the current Sheriff is unwilling to take this step. When I am elected, I will get the tools and enforce the law to ensure that we are doing all that we can to protect the security of every resident in Bergen County."
