Question: Where is Christie on illegal immigration?

My last column attracted a number of comments from Republican insiders and other Trenton regulars. Glad I was able to get the juices flowing.

Some of you constructively e-mailed me directly with additional questions and information. I also received an interesting link to a CNN report by veteran anchor Lou Dobbs.

It showed Chris Christie answering a question about illegal immigration in April of 2008. He tried to say that is was not a crime to simply be in this country illegally. In his report, Lou Dobbs thoroughly dismantled this assertion. Furthermore, a case review by CNN reported that Mr. Chrisite’s office prosecuted just 13 illegal immigrant cases during the same time span during which the US Attorney in Kansas was prosecuting over 500 cases.

I looked into this further for the benefit of the people who are affected the most, the citizens and taxpayers of New Jersey.

Illegal immigration is a very serious and emotional issue. Most estimates put the number of illegal immigrants in New Jersey at in excess of 370,000. In 2007, Senator Joseph Vitale placed it at above 400,000. That’s a lot of people who are here illegally and it is costing New Jersey taxpayers a lot of money.

How much money? How does $2.2 billion sound? That’s the best estimate of the cost to taxpayers of illegal immigrants living in New Jersey.

A lot of crime in New Jersey happens because of illegal immigration. Criminologists argue that the presence of young males has a bad effect on crime rates – and many of the young males here illegally come from countries with a much higher violent crime rate than ours. But I’m not just talking about the big crimes that make it into the newspapers, like the murders of those young students in Newark.

I’m talking about the lost jobs for New Jersey taxpayers. I’m talking about abuse of the system. And, I’m talking about the crime that makes victims of the people here illegally.

Slavery exists in the world. The United Nations estimates that over 600,000 people – mostly women and children – are trafficked across national borders each year. These people are slaves – bought and sold with less formality than a used car. Many end up in sweatshops or as servants, with more ending up in the sex industry.

The numbers of these modern day slaves being brought into New Jersey is growing, with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimating that over 4,000 are brought into our state illegally each year. They are here among us, largely unseen, and their lives are a living hell.

So I looked at the numbers and what they said about Chris Christie’s determination to combat illegal immigration and the crime, cost, and misery that result from it.

To his credit, Mr. Christie did participate in some initiatives to crack down on human trafficking. I read some newspaper coverage of press conferences in which he talked about the problem.

From 2000 through 2007 (the last year for which figures have been compiled), Chris Christie’s office commenced 267 criminal immigration cases out of a total of 6,925 criminal cases. That’s less than 4 percent. The percentage of criminal immigration cases commenced for the entire 3rd District – of which New Jersey is a part – was almost 10 percent.

In 2007, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Delaware prosecuted 24 criminal immigration cases – over 12 percent of its total. That same year, Mr. Christie’s office managed just 37 criminal immigration cases – less than 4 percent. Delaware has a population of only 850,000 to New Jersey’s more than 8.7 million people.

These numbers are disturbing, so I looked on his campaign website to find out his position on illegal immigration. I couldn’t find one.

So, maybe it’s time to ask Mr. Christie and some of the people behind him if they think illegal immigration is a problem in New Jersey. Here’s his leadership team. It’s time to start getting answers to issues that are confronting New Jersey especially those that are costing the taxpayers, Billions of dollars:

Is it just me or has this site taken on a decidedly anti-Christie bent? Then again, I guess if Christie put my old man in jail I'd be less than excited by him becoming Governor. Afterall, this is the same class-act who set his brother-in-law up with a hooker so he could secretly video tape it and send it to his sister on the eve of her sons bar mitzvah so is anything really beneath them? The real shame is that they can find boobs like LaRossa to do their bidding.

I'm glad to see Chris Christie stick up for the little people who have nobody else to stick up for them. Besides someday these people (or some of them anyway), and or their relatives will vote so if the GOP wants to remain viable it's important to be on their side.

Christie on immigration

Christie has shown great leadership and is a true Conservative and patriot. Anyone that knows him can say this with certainty, Christie will always have NJ's best interest at heart. He will do his best to fix the illegal immigration problem, because that is whats best for NJ.

I attended the Reagan Day Event last night, and the only candidate to not toot his own horn and remember that this was a Reagan celebration was Christie. I was proud to be his supporter while listening to him talk about what a great Leader Reagan was to our country, and how wise the GOP would be to try and follow his his foot steps.

I agree Chris Christie is a great American and a credit to the GOP. However, in the unlikely event he becomes Governor I won't hold my breath waiting for him to emulate Reagan. Besides, I can do without Reagan's borrow and spend version of fiscal "conservatism", which added more than two trillion dollars to the federal debt (after inflation adjustment) as well as the TEFRA tax increases he gave us in 1982 and doubling the regressive payroll tax in 1984.

Reagan became president during a period of high inflation and unemployment (commonly referred to as stagflation), which had largely abated by the time he left office. Reaganomics is closely identified with the term "trickle-down economics", providing tax cuts or other benefits to businesses and rich individuals, in the belief that this will indirectly benefit the broad population.

There is more to take from Reagan than just Economics, which wasn't his strongest side. If thats all you take from his Presidency CC, then I would suggest you hit the history books one more time!
I'm not asking, nor would anyone else ask our future governor to take failed economic policies and bring them to NJ! (That's certainly not what Christie has in mind.)
Reagan was so much more. He was a man of integrity and strong values! You dont want to give him credit for "tearing down that wall", or for leading our country in to greatness and for the American and the rest of the worlds people's love for him? Carter was a disaster and made America depressed, while Reagan swept in and rescued us!

I am glad to see Christie has finally added something to his website besides links to fawning press article that really say nothing. I had to check my calender because if I swapped CC's name with BO's name it reminded me a lot of last year's election. I love his theme, "My Campaign for Change". Now, where have I heard that before?

There still is no mention of where he stands on the issues or how he plans to address them. All it says is that he can make things better. That is not going to cut it any more.

I am shocked that you called him a true conservative. Can you tell me what about him deserves this label?

Be it one or be it one hundred million, illegal immigration is just as it says..."ILLEGAL".
What part of Illegal does Mr. Christie or anyone have a problem with? Being a Prosecutor I think Mr. Christie should be well aware that he does not have the authority to say I like this law so I will prosecute this criminal act but I don't like that law so I will let that crime go. Doesn't he have to take an oath of office to uphold the law etc....? If he does and he shirked his duty as a prosecutor then why should anyone trust he will uphold the oath of office as Governor of NJ?
I am soooooo fed up with the “Politics” and shenanigans the "elected officials" have played for years and continue to play. It seems that the respect for the citizen has gone away. I feel as if I have been bought and sold, Rhode hard, put up wet, been made to feel stupid because the person I voted for later embezzled or is "...a gay American..." or taxed toilet paper or through rigged contracts became filthy rich while I still struggle. Not to mention the illegal immigrant getting free health care, and unemployment coverage and free education and other various tax breaks.
Is it too much to ask that candidates run an honest and open campaign where WE THE PEOPLE can truly see what the candidate stands for? Is it too much to ask that elected officials serve respectfully, honestly with honor and at the same time truly represent the people who elected you and not special interest or their own greed! Actually Reagan wasn't all that bad. He did cut tax rates in 1981 but had the courage to reverse himself and raise business taxes and close tax loopholes one year later (TEFRA).

He had the wisdom to support the Federal Reserve Board's tight monetary policy by keeping Paul Volcker as Chairman, a Carter appointee (now an advisor to Obama).

Reagan also saved social security by doubling the payroll tax in 1984 and using the excess cash in the social security trust fund to finance his spending.

He also had the wisdom not to carry out his promise to eliminate the Departments of Energy and Education, and instead expanded the government bureaucracy by creating another Cabinet Department for Veterans.

He exhibited economic savvy by using record high deficits, rather than balancing the budget as he promised he would, to stimulate the economy out of recession (gee, I wonder who else is doing that).

Actually, Obama is following Reagan's game plan. Cut taxes for the middle class and spend lots and lots of money. The only difference is Reagan spent it all on guns, tanks, missiles and warships, while Obama wants to spend it all on education, public works and infrastructure, health care and housing.

Yes, Ronald Reagan was a very wise and great leader indeed. But not for the reasons you seem to think.

Mayor Lonegan's position on illegal immigration is clear and stated plainly. He opposes it. Judging from C. Christie's track record as U.S. Attorney ie. the lack of prosecutions of illegal aliens and his on the record statement concerning illegal aliens, Mr. Christie is O.K. with illegals in N.J. It is alarming that the U.S. Attorney in a state experiencing a flood of illegal aliens chooses not to prosecute illegals. Especially in the wake of the Newark double executions by illegals C.Christie's stance is unconscionable. That's one reason that he received an endorsement from Rudy Giuliani (another former U.S. Atty). Giuliani wanted to make all the illegals U.S. citizens. In this issue New Jersey has a clear choice. Both men's track records speak for themselves. Christie is soft on illegals and probably an amnesty supporter while Lonegan is clearly pro-enforcement of our immigration laws and the only choice for New Jersey Conservatives.
