CLIFTON NJ -- Michael Mecca Jr. was chosen as chairman of Republican Municipal Committee of Clifton last night on a unanimous voice vote of the city’s Republican County Committee.
Mecca, a co-chairman of the Conservative Republican group GOP Strong, said he was honored by the support and pledged to begin rebuilding the party and returning it to a place of prominence in local and county government. He replaces outgoing chairman Ronald Fava, who mecca thanked for his dedication as municipal leader.
“My goal is open the doors of the Republican Party to people who have been sitting on the sidelines looking to get in the game but have not been invited to join a team. They can join our team now – the team that will work to support candidates who stand for smaller, less costly and less intrusive government,” said Mecca.
A former county Republican Party chairman, Mecca said the GOP’s glory days in the 1980’s and 90’s were built on the sturdy foundation of an active Republican organization in Clifton, and he hopes to spearhead a return to Republican prominence in the city and the county.
“The Republican Party in Passaic County cannot win without a vibrant Republican organization working to turn out votes in Clifton. I hope to be part of the Republican resurgence by growing our organization and I will do it by addressing real issues,” said Mecca
“A party can be successful if it works for what the people want, not for the wants any individual,” said Mecca.
Mecca acknowledged the divisions within the county Republican organization, but said “those divisions will not be knitted together by the use of force, threats, innuendo or arrogant chest thumping.”
“The disagreements within our party are real. The passion is real. The complaints are legitimate. They must be acknowledged. Now is the time for a real leader – or team of leaders, to step forward to broker a peace and return this once great party to a position of leadership in our communities in county government,” said Mecca.
