WAYNE NJ -- District 40 Conservative Republican candidates Joseph Caruso and Anthony Rottino support letting voters decide if gay marriage should be legal in New Jersey and are challenging incumbents Scott Rumana and David Russo to support putting a gay marriage proposition on the ballot in November.
Caruso and Rottino say they oppose gay marriage – but that the issue should go to a ballot referendum as it did in California last year, where the voters turned down the gay marriage proposal.
“There are some things that should be sacred and marriage is one of those bedrock institutions that should not be forced to succumb to political correctness,” said Caruso.
“Although I am opposed to gay marriage, I would support a ballot initiative. And I challenge Assemblymen Rumana and Russo to do the same and state their positions on gay marriage,” added Caruso.
A recent Monmouth University Poll suggested there is public support for gay marriage in New Jersey, but Rottino said the only poll that counts is the one in November.
“The lesson from California is that legislators who are subject to special interest pressure and pollsters should not decide important social issues,” said Rottino. “Before Trenton’s insiders ram another social entitlement down our throats, let’s put the matter of gay marriage before the public,” he added. “I don’t trust the legislature to make a decisions for us on this issue.”
