HACKENSACK, NJ -- Bergen County Democratic Organization Chairman Joe Ferriero, who is under a federal indictment for official corruption, is stepping back in the limelight one last time to help his party raise money at an event Ferriero is headlining in Saturday.
Bergen County Republican Party Chairman Robert Yudin said any money raised by Ferriero at the event is tainted. "Only Joe Ferriero and his cronies at the BCDO would think it is appropriate for a politician indicted for corruption to be the guest of honor at a fundraiser,” said Yudin. “It is shocking that Bergen County Democrats who are trying to clean up their party, would welcome Ferriero and promote his pay-to-play antics.
Yudin noted that under Ferriero the Democratic Party has raised spending by $133 million and increased borrowing to nearly $800 million. “Every dollar raised by Ferriero is tainted by his arm-twisting tactics and paid for by taxpayers in the form of no -bid government contracts,” said Yudin.
“To prevent the stench of Ferriero’s activities from spreading throughout Bergen County, the BCDO should return every dollar raised by their disgraced chairman since his indictment,” added Yudin.
Ferriero was indicted on September 9 on eight corruption counts of influence peddling with a grants consulting firm he held a financial stake in. A trial is set for September 2009. He took a leave of absence as chairman just before the indictment was announced and will formally resign on January 22 after hand-picking his successor Michael Kasparian. Indicted with Ferriero was BCDO attorney Dennis Oury.
Since the indictment, the FBI has subpoenaed piles of documents from the Bergen County Freeholder Board, county agencies and municipalities connected to Ferriero, Oury and their grants consulting firm.
