PASSAIC COUNTY -- The plans by an immigrant advisory group to Gov. Corzine’s administrations to give illegal immigrants valid  driver’s licenses and to provide their children with discounted, in-state college tuition rates is  deplorable, says GOP Strong, a conservative  Republican group in Passaic County.    “This is an absurd idea promoted by liberal Democrats who are pandering to extremists in the pro-immigration movement,” said GOP Strong Cochairman Michael Mecca of  Clifton.   “The concept of rewarding people who are in the state illegally with a driver’s license is not only absurd, it is dangerous to the law abiding people in the community.   “Driving is a privilege reserved for legal citizens in good standing. It is not a basic right. Now liberal Democrats want to give that privilege to people who broke the law to get here. That’s just crazy,” said Mecca.   Mecca added that while many immigrants are hard working,, it is impossible to ignore the number of illegal immigrants are involved in criminal activities in our cities.    “There are terrible crimes being committed every day in our cities, such as Paterson and Passaic, and many of those crimes are committed by people who are part of Central and South American gangs,” noted Mecca.   “So the liberals’ idea is to give these thugs more mobility and legal access to our roads and highways so they can more easily sell drugs or commit other crimes? The fact that anyone who cares about America thinks this is a good idea is just astonishing,” added Mecca.  Michael Ramaglia  a GOP-Strong co-chair from  West Milford, said putting thousands of illegal immigrants on the road -- many of whom cannot read English -- with a valid driver’s license is going to create economic havoc and safety concerns.   “What’s the liberal plan to insure all these drivers? Are we going to assume that people who jumped over a fence to get into America are going to bother to buy and keep valid car insurance?” asked  Ramaglia. “Or do the liberals plan on setting up an insurance pool to tax law abiding citizens to pay for car insurance for illegal immigrants?   “GOP Strong Co chair Ann Marie Pusterla, a Wayne resident said she and other mothers are afraid of the liberal idea.     “First, they would be giving illegal immigrants, about whom we know little, easier access to our neighborhoods. How many of these people have criminal records in their home country?” she asked.   “Secondly, what happens to the mom with a van load of kids who gets broadsided by a car driven by an illegal immigrant who has no insurance? How does she get compensated for the damage and possible injuries when that person flees the area? Who is going to find him?” she asked.   GOP Co Chair Robert Fass, a Wayne resident and businessman, said that rewarding the children of illegal immigrant with a college tuition rate reserved for tax paying citizens is a slap in the face to  hard working parents.   “The people who would support this absurd idea are giving no respect to the American taxpayers or the hard working parents struggling to get their kids in college,” said Fass   “There are not an infinite amount of student positions in state colleges. How do you explain to the son or daughter of Joe The Plumber that his or her spot in a state college was taken by a child of an illegal immigrant who probably hasn’t paid state income taxes in years?” asked Fass.   “If every member of the Republican Party in New Jersey doesn’t stand up to oppose this plan, it would be a disgrace,” added Fass.
