Hoboken at-large Councilman Peter Cammarano is campaigning to stop a fair hike on the Port Authority Trans Hudson rail system (PATH).

Cammarano, who counts Gov. Corzine and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez among his constituents, launched the Web site www.stopthepathhike.com today. The site includes news on the fare hikes, dates for upcoming public hearings, form letters to send to the Port Authority and a 600 word biography of Cammarano.

Many of Hoboken’s 38,000 residents use the PATH to commute to jobs in New York. The Port Authority has proposed hiking fares from $1.50 to $2.00 per ride, along with a $2.00 increase in bridge and tunnel tolls.

“The Port Authority is trying to call the PATH hike an ‘adjustment.’ But let’s call it what it really is: a 33% increase on the fare each and every time someone uses the PATH,” said Cammarano in a press release. “With global warming, clogged roads, and our nation’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil, we should be incentivizing public transportation."

Cammarano, an ally of Union City Mayor/state Senator-Elect Brian Stack, is considered a potential candidate for mayor in 2009.

Meanwhile, fellow Hoboken Councilman Ruben Ramos, an Assemblyman-Elect, wrote a letter to the Office of Legislative Services asking them to draft a resolution on his behalf calling on the Port Authority to appoint a Hudson County representative on its board of commissioners.

"Such support from the General Assembly is critical in the immediate future, as the notion of fare hikes have surfaced and countless Hudson residents utilize the crossings into New York City, for which the fares may increase," wrote Ramos.
