GOVERNOR CORZINE WELCOMES NEW JERSEY OLYMPIANS TO DRUMTHWACKET
PRINCETON – Governor Jon S. Corzine today hosted 16 Olympic athletes with New Jersey ties, including several gold medal winners at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
The reception was held at Drumthwacket, the official residence of the Governor of New Jersey.
“The athletes assembled tonight all have different connections to the state,” Governor Corzine said. “Some were born or grew up in New Jersey, some trained or went to school here, others live here now. But they have at least two important things in common: They are all proud to have represented the United States, and New Jersey is proud of each of them.”
Approximately 60 athletes and alternates with New Jersey ties were selected for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. All told, these athletes brought home 26 medals, including 13 gold, two silver, and 11 bronze. Sixteen athletes and their family members attended the reception, with others sending regrets due to college, training, and other schedule conflicts.
“Becoming an Olympic athlete is a feat that cannot be taken lightly,” Governor Corzine said. “It speaks to the dedication and hard work, enthusiasm and perseverance that each of you displays. Your efforts exemplify traits seen in people all across New Jersey.
“New Jersey’s athletes are some of the finest in the world, and for that, you each deserve our congratulations.”
