Governor Corzine calls for emergency economic forum to meet Monday
Alliance for Action serves as catalyst to bolster New Jersey’s economic future
TRENTON – During an address to the Alliance for Action, Governor Jon S. Corzine embraced the organization’s aggressive job creation and infrastructure-bolstering plan while calling for an emergency economic forum to address the ongoing uncertainty in the national economy and its impact on New Jersey.
“The word ‘support’ means a lot of things in this context, and we must embrace all of them,” Governor Corzine said, in reference to the Alliance’s agenda. “It means embracing development as soon as possible, because these types of projects represent an economic stimulus plan our state desperately needs.”
The Alliance for Action, a consortium of business, labor, government and academic leaders dedicated to creating jobs and improving the economy, held the conference in Trenton to discuss future casino construction in Atlantic City. Casinos say they plan an estimated $15 billion in renovation and new construction. Additional projects could push that figure to $28.5 billion and 69,000 new jobs. Those additional proposed projects include upgrades of transportation infrastructure in the Atlantic City region to accommodate new economic activity.
“These are exactly the type of forward-thinking, ambitious plans the state needs to escape the economic doldrums precipitated by the national recession,” Governor Corzine said. “And for that reason and in conjunction with efforts in Washington, I am calling an emergency economic forum, to meet Monday, to discuss additional public-private initiatives to further these efforts.”
Governor Corzine said he plans to assemble a cross-section of business representatives and economic minds from throughout the state, with the goal of planning a comprehensive and immediate plan for action.
“To stand still is to fall behind,” Governor Corzine said. “We need action, and we need it now.”
