STANDARDS TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARINGS

– The Advisory Committee on Police Standards will hold its third public hearing next week. The panel is charged with recommending whether New Jersey should terminate the 1999 consent decree concerning the practice of racial profiling by the New Jersey State Police.

The public notice is below:
By Executive Order dated August 23, 2006, Governor Jon S. Corzine established the Advisory Committee on Police Standards – a 20-member body charged with recommending whether, and under what circumstances, the State of New Jersey should join with the United States Department of Justice in filing a motion to terminate the consent decree concerning the practice of racial profiling by New Jersey State Police. The Advisory Committee is also to examine issues related to local law enforcement. As part of this inquiry, the Advisory Committee has held two public hearings, and plans to hold two additional hearings. The Advisory Committee will also receive written comments and testimony until November 28, 2006.

The Advisory Committee’s next public hearing will be held on Monday, November 13, 2006 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Rutgers University-Camden, in the Multipurpose Room of the Campus Center. Public transportation to Camden is available via the NJ Transit RiverLine or the PATCO High Speed Line. During this public hearing, academic and professional experts, State Police representatives, and members of local police agencies will present testimony related to State and Municipal Police organizations.

The Advisory Committee plans to hold a fourth public hearing on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, which will focus on testimony from community representatives and members of the public. The precise time and location of the hearing will be announced.
