Senator Steve Oroho, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, made the following comment on Governor Corzine's announcement that he plans to address a potential deficit of more than $1 billion this year and more than $8 billion next year with $405 million in vague accounting changes and token spending cuts.
"In New York, Governor Paterson is pleading with Legislature to help him find $3 billion in savings to prepare the state for coming deficits," Senator Oroho said. "In New Jersey, the press had to prod Governor Corzine repeatedly to even acknowledge the state has a problem.
"Instead of dealing with this crisis decisively by ordering immediate spending reductions as Governor Paterson did, the governor is raiding accounts and preparing a list of other half measures that will help the state limp along for a few months at best.
"We are facing a $8 billion to $10 billion shortfall next year, and once again the governor is failing to prepare for tougher times ahead because of his inaction and weak response," Oroho said.
"This is why legislators and the public must continue to insist that Governor Corzine call a special session to deal with the growing budget crisis so that real solutions can be found, and that the governor regularly release tax collection data so that the extent of the problem is transparent to everyone."
