Corzine Keeps Door Open for Irresponsible Pension Gimmick

The Corzine Administration has issued an announcement informing municipalities that an ill-advised and irresponsible pension gimmick is still being considered. Senator Kean urged opponents of the measure to remain vigilant.

"Governor Corzine's reckless gimmick deliberately underfunds pensions and will bring higher property taxes when towns are forced to repay this obligation, with interest. We must remain vigilant in stopping pension deferrals, which the governor himself acknowledged as 'shameful' practices when he was last running for election."

Earlier this week, the proposal (Senate Bill No. 7) failed to come before the Senate for a vote when a unanimous Republican Senate caucus was joined by no fewer than four Democrat senators who recognized the proposal was bad for taxpayers, retirees and public employees.
