A Republican source says that a recent poll conducted by Somerset County Republican Chairman Dale Florio shows the race for Freeholder in a statistical dead heat, with Republican Patricia Walsh and Democrat Melonie Marano in a statistical dead heat, 32%-32%.
Democrats have not won a Freeholder race in Somerset County since 1979, but came close in 1999 and in 2006. But less than three weeks before Election Day, the Republicans appear to have a better handle on the contest – and Marano has not yet received a commitment of any substantial campaign cash from State Democrats, who view their chances to score local victories in Atlantic, Burlington and Monmouth counties with greater optimism.
