** ADVISORY - THURSDAY JT. HEARING **
JT. ASSEMBLY & SENATE ENVIRONMENT PANEL TO HEAR TESTIMONY ON THREAT FROM POLLUTION RUNOFF TO BARNEGAT BAY
(TRENTON) - A joint panel of the Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee and the Senate Environment Committee chaired by Assemblyman John F. McKeon and Senator Bob Smith will hold a Thursday morning hearing to take testimony from stakeholders and members of the public on the environmental condition of the Barnegat Bay and Little Egg Harbor estuarine system.
Increases in pollution runoff have caused elevated levels of phosphorus and nitrogen in the 660 square mile watershed that threaten to cause a massive die-off of its diverse plant and sea life and are a health hazard for humans.
According to the Association of National Estuary Programs, the Bay generates an estimated $4.4 million in annual revenue from tourism and commercial fishing for Ocean County.
"The Barnegat Bay estuary is one of New Jersey's premiere eco-tourism destinations and a significant contributor to the state's commercial fishing industry," said McKeon (D-Essex).
"Rising levels of contamination threaten the watershed and create potential hazards to area residents and the more than 500,000 tourists that arrive at the Bay each summer. I look forward to exploring ways to preserve and protect this invaluable natural resource."
The Assembly and Senate Environment Panel hearing is scheduled to be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, in Community Hall, Lacey Township Municipal Buidling, 101 North Main Street, Forked River, New Jersey.
