Forrester Affirms Opposition to Gas Tax Increase
(Atlantic City, NJ) – In a speech to the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA) today, gubernatorial nominee Doug Forrester reiterated his opposition to a gas tax increase. Forrester does not agree with the UTCA's support for a gas tax increase, but he does agree with the organization that New Jersey must replenish the Transportation Trust Fund.
“With gas prices at $3 per gallon, and the threat of $5 per gallon from Hurricane Rita, New Jersey cannot afford a gas tax, said Forrester. “I have taken a pledge not to raise any taxes, including the gas tax.
Forrester’s transportation plan includes implementing real fiscal controls on how the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) monies are spent, including ensuring that all of the present gas tax is dedicated to the TTF. Forrester will also stop money from being skimmed off the TTF and used for general budgetary purposes.
Additionally, Forrester believes that the TTF should not be funded entirely through bonding, which puts an unfair debt burden on future generations. Finally, Forrester will stop the practice of using TTF bond monies to pay for routine maintenance costs and salaries, which exacerbates the debt burden that our children must pay.
