U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg has a seven-point lead over former Republican U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer, 48%-41%, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning.

More than half of New Jersey’s registered voters – 55% -- say the 84-year-old Lautenberg is too old to effectively serve another six years in the United States Senate.  39% say he is not too old.

Lautenberg has a 46%-38% approval rating, and his favorable are at 43%-35%.  Zimmer, who served in Congress from 1991 to 1997, remains largely unknown to New Jerseyans – 62% don’t know who he is, though he has a 25%-12% favorable rating.

“Sen. Frank Lautenberg has a comfortable lead over a not very strong opponent.  It’s summer and voters aren’t paying a lot of attention to this race,” said Richards.  “When they do, the incumbent’s lead may get bigger – if voters don't get too concerned about the Senator’s age.”

Among independents, Zimmer leads 48%-41%.

Stats

are flawed with registered voters. The pool is contaminated with names that no longer live at addresses. Only 30% of them actually vote.

A better sampling would be from likely voters - those that voted 3 out 4 of the last general elctions.

Also, the uncommitted voter pool has been corrupted since many declared Democratic Party for the presidential primary. The remaining are more likely to vote other than Democrat.

Zimmer

Last week he was campaigning with Republicans! A little late isn't it? Jersey Joe would have made it race at least through hard work and strong issues like drilling and security.

Lautenberg ran on stopping the off shore drilling in the primary. WHY ISN'T THE ZIMMER TEAM POUNCING ON THAT??

MCCAIN andREPUBLICANS NATION WIDE MADE UP HUGE GROUND THE LAST 2 WEEKS ON THE DRILLING ISSUE!!! Wake up and smell the coffee, 65% of americans want new oil drilling, Lautenberg is out of touch, but then again so is the State GOP leadership.

The trouncing in November will be record breaking.

Over 15% I predict.

Stats

For our sake I hope stat's is correct and the undecided voter New Jersey wakes up and votes a leader into office who wont be such a partisan obstructionist like Frank Lautenberg!

Independents..

Only bright light for Zimmer is his lead over independents, if he can keep that edge once more people start paying attention (if they ever do) he may have a shot after all. A very very long shot, but still a shot.

Bergen ?

We dont see any Zimmer office in Bergen like Kean Jr in 06. If Bergen is still the key why are they waiting ?

In my area

Zimmer's people haven't even contacted the local chair people.

Go to his site and volunteer anything but money and see the response that you get.

He is running the same losing format that has plagued us for years. Mr Dull 2008

Drilling

Drill Zimmer Drill. LOL That issue will work for weeks more.

Lance too or you"ll suffer the same fate.
