Top court says Bryant can't use campaign funds to pay lawyers

Former Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Wayne Bryant (D-Lawnside), now in prison following his conviction on federal corruption charges, cannot use leftover campaign funds to pay his lawyers, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled today.

Bryant had appealed a New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission ruling that barred him from spending $600,000 from his campaign account to pay his legal defense team.

The Camden County Democrats was convicted in 2008 on charges that he traded state funds for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) for a pension-boosting now-show job.  Bryant left the Senate after not seeking re-election in 2007.  He was sentenced to four years in a federal prison in 2009.

What a crook!

Campaign contributions are to be used when campaigning. They're not to be used to pay your lawyer fees after being sent to prison. Pay them with your own money!
