Baroni to leave Senate for Port Authority post

Gov. Christopher Christie has tapped State Sen. Bill Baroni (R-Hamilton) as the new Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, setting up a November 2010 special election for the politically competitive 14th district Senate seat.

Baroni, a 38-year-old Mercer County Republican, will replace Susan Bass Levin, a former state Community Affairs Commissioner and Cherry Hill Mayor, who resigned in January to join Cooper Union Hospital.  The post is the top staff position for New Jersey at the bi-state agency, which operates the nation’s busiest airport systems, as well as the PATH rail transit system, six interstate tunnels and bridges, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, marine terminals and ports, and the World Trade Center.   The Port Authority has a $6.3 billion annual budget and has over 7,000 employees.

A Seton Hall University law professor, Baroni was elected to the Assembly in 2003 and to the Senate in 2007, where he has been widely viewed as one of the state’s rising political stars.  As a Judiciary Committee member, he emerged as one of the intellectual leaders of the upper house.  He was an early supporter of Christie’s bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination last year.

By tradition, the Executive Director of the Port Authority is named by the governor of New York and the Port Authority Chairman and Deputy Executive Director are designated by the governor of New Jersey.  Christie has not yet nominated anyone to the Port Authority.

Christie is taking public authorities seriously and putting allies in place to lead them. Ralph Marra, Jr., who was First Assistant U.S. Attorney during Christie’s seven years as federal prosecutor, was announced yesterday as the new counsel to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.  Another former prosecutor, Deborah Gramiccioni, is the head of the Authorities Unit in office of the governor’s chief counsel.

congrats!

Baroni is a good man.

GREAT NEWS

We get rid of a RINO in the State Senate

Great News!

and elect a Democrat

Senator Linda Greentstein

Linda will easily be the next Senator from D14.

Phoney Baroni

One more Arlen Specter like Republican out of office.
Instead of switching parties, he just got a better job.

And the patronage mill chugs on....

What are his qualifications for this post other than endorsing Christie for governor?

He doesn't have any and it tells me he's taking a safe landing because re-districting may not be kind to his senate seat.

Aww I liked Sen. Baroni.

Aww I liked Sen. Baroni. Maybe cause he was a RINO? I dunno, who cares. Good guy.

Replacement

If the 'R's really want to keep this seat then
they had better call on Kelly Yaede. The
Dem's fear no one in the Republican party
except Kelly. Anyone else loses to either
Greenstein(the frontrunner) or DeAngelo, who
is a long shot.

THANK GOD

We got rid of a RINO

great choice

my bet is he will be back! he is young and we are lucky to have him in NJ in any post.

good riddance you rino

good riddance you rino

Sorry Junior, but the REAL Reagan would have loved Baroni

Ronald Reagan would love Bill Baroni.

It's amazing how this generation of what passes for conservatives has recreated Reagan in their own image.

Please "reagan conservative," tell me how Reagan's amnesty for millions of illegal aliens is consistent with your brand of uber-conservatism?

The REAL Reagan also signed off on the earned income tax credit -- you know, the thing Obama supported and for which he was labeled a "socialist." Reagan actually stated that the EITC was "the most pro-family legislation" in American history.

Finally, Reagan wrote an impasssioned speech delivered to the US Senate in which he lent his unqualified support to the UN treaty banning torture. Reagan even went further than the treaty, stating that any form of coercion short of actual torture should be prohibited and PROSECUTED to the full extent of the law.

So let's see ... the REAL Reagan was pro-amnesty for illegals, pro-socialist tax credit programs and unqualifiedly against the use of torture and coercion.

Oh, BTW, As Governor of California, Reagan instituted a billion dollar tax increase to rebuild the state's infrastructure. At the time, it was the LARGEST state tax increase in American history. Reagan actually believed that investing public dollars to acheive a critical goal was a valid function of government. He did the same thing with the military budget as President.

It looks like RINO Bill Baroni would fit in nicely with the REAL Reagan. What Reagan said and how he actually governed was often quite different. What made him great was his ability to separate rhetoric from reality. You should consider changing your name as it is a continuing stain on this great man's name and accomplishments.

Good luck Bill. Ronny would wish you the same if he were here ;^ )

An academy award for Reagan

For best performance by a RINO masquerading as a conservative.

"Number 6" forgot to mention the 1982 TEFRA tax increase in 1982 which reversed many of the previous years tax cuts and was the largest tax increase in history up to that time.

And let's not forget the the same RINO Reagan who made his career trashing social security and medicare also saved those entitlement programs in 1984 when he signed into law the biggest payroll tax increase in history, including a tax to pay for Medicare.

The same RINO who promised he would abolish the Energy and Education Depts. and instead added another Cabinet Department for Veterans Affairs.

The same RINO whose response to terrorism was to trade arms for hostages.

Ronnie "The RINO" Reagan. He makes Bill Baroni look like Steve Lonegan.

You may have got rid of a RINO, but

Hey New Jersey, wake up! This is just a pension boosting moment that will have long-term economic implications since you will be paying inflated pensions for him.

That is what they do, accumulate part-time service screwing up New Jersey financially, then near retirement they get a plumb job with a big salary, making their 25 years of service pension calculation based on the last 3 years. Life-time inflated income paid for by you the taxpayer.

You need pension reform really bad because if it continues there will be one person left to pay for everything.

No pension boost...

In the name of accuracy, all Port Authority of NY/NJ employees are in the NYS pension system, not NJ.

Like you're qualified ...

to decide who's a Republican.
In this state, the name for a hard-right conservative candidate is Loser.

Patronage job

Well the alternative might have been Lonegan won last year's primary and (unbelievable as it may be) the general also, and then appointed say demsandonts to the Port Authority. I'd rather have Baroni there.

business as usual

So much for Chris Christie's pledge to change the Government works HaHaHa the joke is on us. This appointment is just business as usual political cronie gets big job. What are his qualifications anyway

Nice job, it’s a great post.
