Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Princeton) says that New Jersey Democrats should consider Camden Mayor Dana Redd’s opposition to same sex marriage before they re-elect her as Democratic state vice chair tonight. Redd served in the State Senate until January 1.
“I personally like Dana, however, during the marriage equality debate, I was disappointed that Senator Redd snubbed Civil Rights leader Julian Bond when he wanted to discuss his views on the marriage vote before the Senate,” Gusciora said. “While I can respect her personal views against gays, but as Democratic vice chair, one would hope she would have shown more sensitivity on the issue, especially when coming from a respected civil rights leader. In this instance, she held herself out as the vice chair of the party of intolerance, especially in light of the ultimate outcome that occurred in the legislature. At least other Democratic opponents at the time were willing to listen to the other side.”
The Democratic State Committee is meeting tonight to elect a leadership slate for a two-year term. Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville) is expected to become the new Democratic State Chairman. Joseph Cryan (D-Union), the new Assembly Majority Leader, is not seeking re-election.
