The State Senate has postponed a vote on marriage equality legislation, and there is talk that the General Assembly will vote first, according to a Star-Ledger report. The sponsors, State Sens. Raymond Lesniak (D-Elizabeth) and Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) told the Star-Ledger that they expect Senate President Richard Codey (D-Roseland) to agree to the delay.
The Assembly Judiciary Committee could consider the issue on January 4, setting the stage for a vote of the full Assembly a few days later. For same sex marriage to become law, both houses would have to approve the legislation, and outgoing Gov. Jon Corzine would have to sign the bill, before the Legislature reorganizes on January 12.
