Senate President Richard Codey (D-Roseland) says that the Senate Judiciary Committee will consider marriage equality legislation on Monday. The legislation must be approved by the panel before going to the floor for a vote of the full Senate. Steven Goldstein, the chairman of Garden State Equality, the state's largest gay rights organization, said he was "jubilant" at the prospect of a vote. More than 700 people showed up at a statehouse rally in support of same sex marriage today.
Paul Sarlo (D-Wood-Ridge), the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, announced today that he would post the bill, but would vote no.
“I don’t support this legislation,” said Sarlo. “However, in a democracy, I do not believe that one person should prevent any piece of legislation from having a fair hearing and an open vote in public.”

Bad Idea
Important legislation like this should not be considered in this lame duck session so that fake friends and imaginary tough foes can posture without the risk of being held accountable by the voters one way or the other for another two years.
We have bigger issues
to work on as opposed to this cr@p.
Squeaky Wheel
700 people are now dictating what should be put on the legilative calandar. This is a disgrace! This will go down in flames like it did in New York. I still can't imagine why we would make this a priority.
Equality
Well, in order to be inspired about that equality thing in marriage, why just they don't bear in mind that Holiday season is coming up. Kwanzaa is one of the three main end of the year holidays, along with Christmas and Hanukkah, and searches for "Kwanzaa 2009" on Google Trends indicate that some people are wondering when it occurs. Kwanzaa is celebrated on the same dates every year, December 26th to January 1st of the New Year, and that never changes.
Did not do a head count
but most of those at the rally were not from New Jersey.
Kwanzaa

Political suicide for the Democrats
If this passes. A petition to overthrow this legislation will ultimately put this on the ballot in the November 2010 election. The law will then be repealed by a large vote and it will take the rest of the Democrats with it on the ballot resulting in big loses for them across the board. In particular gay marriage is an overwhelming negative with the African American community which is the core of the Democratic Party. If the Democrats lose African Americans on this issue they are doomed. I don't think they want to commit political suicide.
