Winners & Losers: 2009 General Election Edition

Former U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie, left, will become the 55th Governor of New Jersey in January, after defeating incumbent Jon Corzine, right, by more than 100,000 votes.  Democrats lost just one Assembly seat, but the GOP picked up eight Freeholder seats across the state.  Christie is the first Republican to win statewide in twelve years, and his plurality was the second best for a GOP challenger against a Democratic incumbent in state history. Corzine, who spent over $130 million of his own money running for office over the last nine years, won just 45% of the vote.  Christopher Daggett, a former state environmental protection commissioner who qualified for matching funds, spent over $1.5 million, and won the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, received a pitiful 6% of the vote.

GOP also lost

While Christie, Webber, and others in the GOP leadership can claim an impressive win in the governor's race, they failed to capitalize on a great opportunity to pick up seats in the Assembly. On paper LD1 was ripe for the taking, but in retrospect a lot of dough was sent down south when it might have been better spent elsewhere. The blame here might actually rest with the Christie campaign that failed to see beyond Daddy Warbucks Corzine to the ominous prospect of having to work with a hostile Dem legislature. I never saw one photo or political ad from the Christie campaign that touted one of the GOP Assembly challenger candidates.

Virgin 21

You couldn't be more incorrect. Either that or you are willfully ignorant. There was mail with Christie and the assembly candidates all over LD1.

Pringle

Let's see how long Pringle can keep his "power" once the Gov-elect fails to come through on the absurd promises that he made to get their endorsement. According to Pringle et al - Christie will stop all fish kills at Salem in his first 100 days and stop the Delaware dredging. Yeah, good luck with those two issues!

how sad

it's very disappointing that successful yellow journalism is now lauded as a "win."

what's next? gannett deciding court cases based on fanning the passions of ingnorance? what a proud day that will be for journalists everywhere.

Paul Mulshine lost, but Alan

Paul Mulshine lost, but Alan Steinberg? Mr. Mulshine's criticism was just wishful thinking dressed up to look like thoughtful analysis, but Alan Steinberg was a Christie supporter and his criticism came from love and not a desire to see Christie fail.

Baroni = LOSER

Baroni a winner, ha-ha! Christie only won Hamilton by a thousand votes and Mercer County was the best performing Dem County for Corzine in the State. Good job Bill!

Sorry Diablo

Not willfully ignorant; just plain ignorant. Being a north Jersey guy, I don't make it below the Mason Dixon line that often. Glad to hear there was a joint effort between Christie and the LD1 candidates. But then again, that might prove my point. Where was Chris with Assembly candidates in the other competitive districts?

Lonegan, Shaftan and the Peabaggers

They are the biggest losers. The past year Lonegan and Shaftan were saying Christie can't win. They now have as much credibility as cheerleaders for the Oakland Raiders. As to the peabaggers all they did was complain about Christie not coming to their rallies. Now we know why.

Dr. Pinkett is a Winner

Hello! Corzine lost and Pinkett's name is now in the NJ political atmosphere without going down on a sinking ship (or shouldering the blame). And he wasn't even looking to get into politics. Sounds like he won to me.
