The Star-Ledger, New Jersey's largest daily newspaper, has endorsed former state Environmental Protection Commissioner Christopher Daggett, an independent, for Governor.
"The newspaper's decision is less a rejection of Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican Chris Christie than a repudiation of the parties they represent, both of which have forfeited any claim to the trust and confidence of the people of New Jersey. They share responsibility for the state's current plight," the Star-Leder wrote. "Only by breaking the hold of the Democratic and Republican mandarins on the governor's office and putting a rein on their power will the state have any hope for the kind of change needed to halt its downward economic, political and ethical spiral."
The Star-Ledger is a sponsor of the October 16 gubernatorial debate, and had agreed to withhold any endorsement until after that debate was over. Click here to read Wally Edge's story.

Ledgers True Colors
At the end of the endorsement, it should have said, "Paid for by Corzine '09". Daggett, Corzine and now the Ledger have worked in near perfect coordination.
It won't though, prevent Chris Christie from becoming NJ's 55th Governor on Nov 3rd.
Daggett can't win ...
This is a throwaway endorsement, because it will not accomplish what the SL says it wants -- a break on the hold of the Ds and Rs on the state of New Jersey.
If you want to break that hold you need to pass a few other things.
1) Publicly fund elections;
2) Have elections run on instant runoff, with ballot position and funding going to parties that pass certain first ballot thresholds;
3) Allow multiple party endorsements, so that a 3rd party can endorse a D or R and have votes for that candidate accrue to their party.
4) Remove the two major parties from the state constitution, or allow other parties in. It's a shame that we publicly fund the primaries of the two major parties, and that committee seats are official positions.
There are lots of other things to do if you want to break the hold, but those are a few of them. Any other ideas?
This is HUGE
Do not underestimate the importance of this endorsement. Read the editorial carefully -- it is a repudiation of Gov. Corzine and it is aimed at the pragmatic voters who take the time to study the issues, judge the candidates and see voting as a duty of good citizenship. These are voters who typically do not pull vote straight down the column -- they pick the candidates who they think are best suited to be elected. This editorial gives Daggett media buzz and more importantly, MOMENTUM, going into the last three weeks of this campaign. There are many, many undecided voters and also many registered Ds and Rs who are looking for a reson NOT to vote for their party's candidates, who feels the parties could have nominated better candidates that Christie and Corzine. Perhaps these voters will think 'i should vote for Daggett, he is the best candidate and others think so too.' My gut feeling is that once you get away from the core party loyalists, D and R, the bulk of registered Ds and Rs are not gung-ho on either Corzine or Christe -- their support is soft. If voters see casting their ballot for Daggett as not wasting a vote, if they sense momentum, if they see a string of newspaper endorsements, if they hear Daggett's name every day in news reports for the next 3 weeks, they will vote for Daggett. This is all my opinion -- stressing the word 'opinion' but the Star Ledger's message today is to repudiate both parties. I would never have thought the Star Ledger would so forcefully carry the same message of Bob Ingle and Jim Gearheart, to Get Ride of Incumbent Politicians (GRIP) and to not give its editorial weight to Gov. Corzine.
Go Star-Ledger
What a sigh of relief from the paper. Thank god it did not endorse, Jon "it's Bush's fault" Corzine or Chris "I'm not Corzine" Christie.
Christie is going nowhere, and his brother Todd Christie who helps funnel money through other states illegally as reported to the Christie campaign can stop posting on here as GoredNJ.
Yet another blunder from the Star-Ledger!
No wonder that this paper is bankrupt, barely keeping its nose over the water. I have not seen the more detached newspaper from its readership except The New York Times, which is going bankrupt pretty soon too. I do not get the following “Republican mandarins on the governor's office.” Who are they and where do they live? “Independent” Daggett is Corzine’s stooge designed to take away votes away from Chris Christie so Corzine can squeeze in. Will voters of New Jersey be fooled by this kindergarten strategy? I doubt it. However, the Star-Ledger proved to be on this level.

Future endorsements
I would not be surprised if all the daily papers in NJ endorse Daggett, except for The Trentonian. Also, there seems to be a buzz building among state employees on various web sites to support Daggett, especially since Gov. Corzine said he would not make some payments into their pension fund in order to balance the budget next year. And now, Corzine just came out against VLTs at the state's racetracks, a priority for Dick Codey. I can't see Codey and his bloc of Democrats supporting Gov. Corzine beyond the expected public comments. I doubt the Codey D's will be knee-deep in the trenches, working to turn out the vote. Add it all up, and the stars could align for Daggett.
Support Christie
I do support Christie. He is the ONLY candidate who has a chance at getting Corzine out of office. We NEED Corzine out! Daggett cannot win. Period. He doesn't have the money, nor the support. He does have a 'few' good ideas, but nothing I would say is the golden ticket. The people of this state are suffering. My own family is suffering from the high taxes. I drive through the urban areas and feel terrible that people have to live under those conditions of garbage thrown everywhere, crime, AND high taxes. Daggett should quit immediately if he wants any type of change in NJ.
Do you like Christie medium or well?
This campaign is turning into a political pig roast. Slowly but surely Christie is being roasted by the media (led, ironically, by uberconservative Paul Mulshine at the Star-Ledger), toasted by Corzine's multi-million dollar negative ad campaign, and basted by Chris Daggett's momentum.
He has as much chance now as a cooked pig getting up and climbing out of the pit.

There is no interest in a blow-out
The Star Ledger is just trying to manipulate a good fight that will sell papers. If it is over like most of us expect, then no one will care to read the dribble of the Ledger.
the S-L got this one right....
Corzine is a shill for Carla and her friends, while Christie is a sham.
Independents are our only hope!
GO DAGGETT GO!
Star Ledger gets it right
Finally main stream organizations are coming to agreement with the consensus: The broken two-party system has brought a plague of scandal and corruption upon our state.
The only way to save our state from this plight is two break the monopolistic strange old these corrupt self serving parties have on our government.
I Agree with the ledger and
I AM VOTING DAGGETT
I Encourage all readers to help spread the word about this endorsement and Chris Daggett and visit http://njelection.wordpress.com
All I can say is...
News Papers sell their Soul for money
Daggett is a SPOILER for the Norcross, Corzine, Sweeney Team to get Christie out. Norcross wants to control the state.
The newspapers were not doing well and this was an opportunity for someone to help them out. The deal comes with endorsements and special media stories to make the democratic candidates look like heros. All this for a few bucks. Thanks newspapers for screwing the people of New Jersey
Daggett messing it up for everyone except the greedy people
This little guy is a sell out to New Jersey and the residents. He's not very intelligent and personally I found him to be Nervous and stuttering on answers. He could NOT understand some of the questions and the paid media afterwards gave this man praise as per their instructions. Christie won the debate hands down and they knew it, but if you get enough money, who cares right? It's up to the people of NJ now to vote Corzine and the entire Democratic ticket out. It is about principal and ridding corruption. People need to breath, not be dictated too.
Daggett is a disgrace
Great endorsement...
The Associated Press had 3 independent economists review each candidates plan and independent economists agree the Daggett tax plan is best
Of Corzine's plan they said by raising sales tax, income tax and reducing property tax rebates Corzine has created a climate that has caused many businesses to leave the state.
On Christie's plan those economists said it is unrealistic, would create a huge budget deficit and would create a second sales tax.
Vote Daggett!! Say no more to politics as usual. Break the Cycle.
If you're afraid that a vote for Daggett is a Vote for Corzine, don't be because the polls show Daggett is hurting Corzine and putting Christie ahead.
See this Daggett Hurts Corzine and Helps Christie
You can be sure that you don't waste your vote by making the I'll vote for Dagget pledge.
The Daggett pledge is based on a simple premise, if enough people pledge their vote then you will vote for Daggett

Daggett Can Win...
AND HERE'S HOW
Mark Blumenthal over at the National Journal Polling site points out that Chris Daggett can win.
He finished the articles stating that voters should feel comfortable that there vote is not a wasted vote if Daggett breaks 25% in the polls. As the Washington Post has reported at 20% Path Exists For Daggett to Win Race. For those who haven't heard, Daggett has already passed 20% in latest polls."
Can Daggett Pull A Ventura?
Mark Blumenthal lays out all of the intriguing parallels between the Daggett Campaign and the Ventura Campaign and asks the question "Can Daggett Pull a Ventura?"
He says that "In almost every case, three dynamics facilitate the also-ran"s rise: Strong performances in campaign debates and endorsements from prominent newspapers boost their name recognition, while a last-minute surge in the polls helps convince voters that the long shot really can win."
For those who haven't been following the campaign, all three of these factors exist. Daggett has won all three of the Gubernatorial Debates. Every main stream media organization reported Daggett won the first debate hands down.
Winning that debate on Daggett nation wide media coverage and praises from out of state papers like the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The media buzz helped Daggett win an endorsement from NJ's largest Newspaper, The Star Ledger and caused the NY Times to give a reluctant endorsement to Jon Corzine while once again praising Daggett. That news helped kick up the rumor that Mayor Bloomberg is considering a Chris Daggett endorsement
Mark Blumenthal's report also doesn't considered the Recorder News Paper group, which consists of about a dozen NJ papers, to rescind their endorsement of Christ Christie. Instead the 12 New Jersey Newspapers reconsidered their endorsement of Christie and chose to endorse Daggett instead stating that Christie"s lack of a plan and their opinion that only an Independent who is not the slave of special interest can fix the "pirate ship" of "corruption" that exist in NJ.
Daggett went on to win the 2nd Gubernatorial Debate and the the 3rd. In the 3rd NJ Gubernatorial debate here Chris Daggett handed it to both Christie and Corzine for corruption saying to fight corruption you need to lead by example."
Daggett then cited specific corrupt activities that Christie and Corzine had engaged in, including illegal campaign finance and pay to play, and neither Corzine or Christie could defend themselves.
Instead, Corzine acknowledges that activity is going on and agrees with Daggett that it needs to stop.
So taking all of these factors into consideration…
Can Daggett Win?
According to the Washington Post and Mark Blumenthal of the National Journal and a growing number of political analysts the answer is yes. It will be, however, they both note a hard battle. But the key thing here is analysts opinion is shifting from it is impossible for Dagget to Win to Daggett Can Win"
Mark Blumenthal says if Daggett breaks 25% voters should feel comfortable that a vote for Daggett is not a wasted voted. He points out that Ventura only polled at 27% and was also being called a spoiler.
Mark states:
He also points out that even though Ventura was only polling at 27% in the final poll and Ventura won the election by pulling in 37% of the vote.
Mark ends his article with "I'd only vote for him," he said, "if I got more info on him and he was at 25 and they were at 35."
Vineland Daily Journal
The Vineland Daily Journal issued its endorsement on Friday and flipped from Corzine to Daggett:
The headline 'Business as usual' is just unacceptable
