Rove says he talked to Christie about gubernatorial bid

Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove says he spoke with then-U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie about his interest in running for Governor, according to testimony Rove gave to the House Judiciary Committee last month.

“I talked to him twice in the last couple of years, perhaps one time while I was at the White House and once or twice since I left the White House, but -- not regarding his duties as U.S. Attorney, but regarding his interest in running for Governor, and he asked me questions about who -- who were good people that knew about running for Governor that he could talk to,” Rove told the panel.

Rove said that Christie never discussed his duties as U.S. Attorney.

“He may have said, I am really enjoying the job and, you know, I have got a whole bunch of cases that I am prosecuting and, boy, maybe you have been reading about me. But no; about the sum and substance of it, no,” Rove said.

Rove said he “vaguely” recalls Christie looking into allegations against U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken) before the 2006 election, but testified that he had no personal communications with Christie or anyone at the Department of Justice or the White House Counsel’s office about the Menendez investigation.

Asked if the timing of the investigation was favorable to Republicans in the election, Rove said “I suspect so.”

“I don’t know enough about New Jersey politics and how widely it was covered to make comment,” said Rove.

Sean Darcy, a spokesman for Gov. Jon Corzine’s campaign, says that “it’s pretty clear now that Christie was running a gubernatorial campaign out of the United States Attorney’s office with the Bush White House and Bush’s political brain, Karl Rove.

Darcy is calling on Christie to disclose when he started planning his campaign for Governor.

“When did the planning start for his gubernatorial campaign? Who was involved with the planning, including members of the United States Attorney’s office? How did all of this impact his investigations, including prosecutorial decisions?” Darcy asked.

Of course ... who in their

Of course ... who in their right mind would think Christie makes him own decisions? Just watch him for a few months ... he is not exactly "his own man."

Darcy...,,Perfect Rep for the Say Anything to win campaign

Jon Corzine( D-Wall Street) and his campaign caddies continue to distort the truth and on occasion flat out lie about Chris Christie and his positions. It's apparently not enough that Corzine will outspend his opponent 5 to 1 but he also seems to feel compelled to practice the politics of personal destruction and distortion.

84 days until Corzine can go back to dating and e-mailing Carla Katz. So much for transparency Timid Jon (D-Hypocrite)

So is it Corzine's position

So is it Corzine's position that Chris Christie should not have prosecuted Sharpe James, Wayne Bryant, John Lynch, Joe Coniglio, Mims Hackett or Al Steele? Because Corzine did nothing to put those crooks away while Christie was US Attorney. Comment on that Sean Darcy?

The Corzine-Chritie race is

The Corzine-Chritie race is like two mob families battling it out.

Gorednj

No one is disorting this, it is Karl Rove. Obviously CC was running for Gov for years and here is the proof.

njdems

Your post has nothing to do with this, and no JSC wasnt against that. He was against CC gping after Menendez for nothing I love Rove's notion that he doesnt know enough abt NJ politics...BS! of course they talked specifics. Looks like the shine is coming off cc already

SJBlue...

Hudson County boss Bob Menendez used taxpayer grants that were supposed to go to poor people and instead paid himself over $300,000 in "rent" for buildings in the projects

Liberals are supposed to advocate for the poor, why didn't Jon Corzine stand up for the poor and denounce this action by Menendez?

Btw, New York Times if you doubt the facts:

"a lease arrangement between Menendez and the North Hudson Community Action Corp. The non-profit group, which received federal funding backed by Menendez, paid Menendez more then $300,000 over nine years to rent a building he owned in Union City."

right

I noticed you left out the very crucial, very important and critical piece of information. He charged significantly less than fair market value for rent-in other words it was a very good deal that this nonprofit would not have gotten elsewhere. Thus, the nonprofit saved money and could do more good. The deal was cleared by the House ethics committee. No evidence existed to file charges. It was a political hatchet job, that we all know was orchestrated by Karl Rove. Rove practically admits it, furthermore he outed Christie for playing politics at all while he was US Attorney. CC "do as I say not as I do"

SJBlue

LIke your boy Timid Jon (D-Out of Touch)...you distort and exaggerate. My guess is that you didn't read the testimony, (why let the facts get in the way--Corzine'09) because if you read it you would see that your post was ridiculous.

Meanwhile, so what if Rove & Christie talked about him running for Governor. No one, not even The Beard, has been able to prove that the office was run politically.

If Christie had a dollar for everyone that talked to him about running for Governor in the last 7 years---he would have "Corzine Money" to piss away on lies and distortions.

Corzine lied about Florio, Lied about Bob Franks and lied about Forrester. Do you really think that all three of these men were as evil as Corzine painted them? If you do, and Corzine wins, then you deserve 4 more years of the highest taxes in the nation.

BTW

In the last 5 weeks, Corzine has done more then he did in the last 3 1/2 years. Who knows, he may even put people on his Ethics Committee that he introduced with great fanfare 11 months ago.

Can you people really be falling for his B.S. again?

Another point left out...

While CC was blowing lots of smoke around the Menendez lease to a non-profit organization, he succeeded, as he no doubt intended, in getting the likes of Paul Mulshine to run with the "story," trying to fan things into a fire. What gets lost is that the Menendez lease deal provided not only a very fair price to the tenant, but also included a "funding clause" that meant if the tenant lost their grant funding, they could cancel their lease. That is the most "pro-tenant" lease clause imaginable. Self-dealing landlord types don't agree to cancellation clauses. Whether it was part of a future Gubernatorial campaign or just keeping Rove and company happy, the investigation was without justification. I'm glad Jon Corzine saw that clearly for what it was and appointed Menendez to the Senate seat.

So It's Corzine's Position

No, the point is to associate Christie with Rove and Bush. New Jersey doesn't need another Rove/Bush disciple; because that worked out so well for the country for eight years.

Russ

Packing going a little slow? Need help? Move already. This is a non-issue. So what if he discussed future employment plans while on the job. Not a single Dem on here complained when Bowles while working in the White House was soliciting advic from the Clintons. Or any other Democrat Member of Congress who sought advice when contemplating higher office. Does the name Jon Corzine ring a bell? Hypocrites.

The Point is

CC claims to have "Never talked politics" we know he did with Jenn Beck, and now we know he did with the most high ranking political mind in the GOP. CC full of hot air, the shine is coming off. As I have said before JSC wins by 3 to 5

Thanks Politicker

"I talked to him twice in the last couple of years, perhaps one time while I was at the White House and once or twice since I left the White House, but not regarding his duties as U.S. Attorney, but regarding his interest in running for governor, and he asked me questions about who -- who were good people that knew about running for Governor that he could talk to," -- Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, mentioning Chris Christie during his July 2009 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee

We all know of course Rove also talked to him about his duties as US Attorney, but either way this points to the obvious

You are missing the point of this testimony

The point is that is a violation of Federal Law to even discuss your possible election or political asperation while serving as a US Attorney. If Rove is to be believed, (and why not he is afterall a Republican strategist) then Christie broke the law in pursiung gubernatorial asperations, advise, planning and strategy while serving as a US attorney. That is the point. Who can you trust if the prosecutor is breaking the law himself? And yes, he did prosecute the bad guys and should have, but he should be held to the same standard. No One is above the law.

You don't know the point

Just because someone talked about a possible candidacy for any office as a US Attorney, it is not a violation of the law. You obviously don't know the law. " Historically, the Civil Service Commission (Commission) held that “the prohibition against candidacy extends not merely to the formal announcement of candidacy but also to the preliminaries leading to such announcement and to canvassing or soliciting support or doing or permitting to be done any act in furtherance of candidacy. Because the Hatch Act has been interpreted to prohibit preliminary activities regarding candidacy, any action that can reasonably be construed as evidence that the individual is seeking support for or undertaking an initial “campaign” to secure nomination or election to office would be viewed as candidacy for purposes of the Hatch Act." No where does Rove state Christie solicited his support or began the "initial campiagn" to secure the nomination. You both are grasping at straws and it is quite pathetic. I will state again - then Bobby Kennedy and Janet Rebno violated the law under your warped view of the Hatch Act.

Conversly

I am mearly holding CC to his own standards, holding CC accountable for what he said of himself. Im not saying he should drop his candidacy, but I am saying that this is just one in a strong a hundred quasi-ethical, and actual ethical breaches that we've seen from him.

"Angry, Desperate Clowns," Act I, Scene 2

roland_weimer screeches, "No One is above the law."

Mr. Weimer is raising this generalization, based on the palpably risible assertion that the most highly successful federal prosecutor the state has ever seen, was somehow prohibited from listening to, or possibly even asking in a non-committal conversation, who some good people might be to keep in mind, should he at some future time decide to take a career step of running for higher public office.

If Mr. Rove suggested to Chris Christie that he should seriously think about giving consideration to a gubernatorial in the future, well then good for him!

Hey, I would have told the guy the same thing, if I had ever had the opportunity of having a brief conversation with him.

So, good for all of us, too! Thank you Karl.

If Mr. Weimer actually believed his silly nonsense, then he would be cheering too!

That is not actively planning and pursuing gubernatorial aspirations by any stretch of the imagination. At worst, it is called giving a little mature consideration to your potential future plans, something that nearly an entire generation of greedy, criminal pigs in high Democrat party leadership positions in this state obviously did not do when they were so busy raiding the public till to their own personal advantage!

Where were you, Mr. Weimer, when they were openly stealing us blind? Mum's the word, huh?

Here, Mr. Weimer, a little reminder you obviously need . . . Bob Janiszewski, John Lynch, Wayne Bryant, Sharpe James, Joe Coniglio . . . just to name a few on the long list. Those are just some of the high Democrat party officials in New Jersey who, in recent years, have been criminally convicted on a garden variety of REAL and disgusting corruption charges -- crimes against all of us.

"Much would have more!," was their motto!

And given the fact that Mr. Christie was obviously very careful in selecting only those cases which were fully ripe for prosecution -- 132 – 0 -– you can bet that there were many times that number of preliminary investigations conducted, for which there was incomplete or conflicting evidence, or, for which the credibility of witnesses may have been a consideration, or where people inexplicably changed their testimony, or where harmless technical or petty and non-venal "violations" simply did not warrant invocation of the federal criminal process.

During part of the time Chris Christie and his admirable team of federal prosecutors were successfully pursuing that string of successful corruption cases, the highest law enforcement official in our State, the McGreevey-appointed Democrat attorney general, Peter Harvey (after the position had been held for one year by David Samson), gave new meaning to the phrase "asleep at the switch," including reportedly screwing up any possible prosecution over the outrageous early springing of convicted mobster Angelo Prisco from jail!

Peter Harvey was apparently too busy being a big hip-hop fan and shopping his resume around to do his job!

Politically, you'd think Democrats would now have enough intelligence to keep their yammers shut when it comes to Mr. Christie's commendable tenure as the United States attorney! But they cannot because they are desperate!

Instead they are desperately probing to find some way to run Corzine's campaign against the former President, and now by extension Karl Rove.

What a bunch of pathetic clowns!

Well the circus is leaving town in November. Gather up your grease pencils and unicycles. You are out of here!

I guess

I guess, whatever you say brother. CC can be quoted that he never did what Rove testified. Case closed.

non-profit means the legal

non-profit means the legal entity does not make a profit. it does not mean the individuals involved cannot make a profit and it does not automatically mean they "do good" because they have non-profit status. Most lobbyist groups and issue advocacy groups get non-profit status as well as charities.

Many people use the stupidity of some liberals in order to run scams. That is why there are so many scams in things like the Abbott school systems and alternative energy projects.

I know

I know what nonprofit is. It is an entity that has a quasi-ownership structure, and does not distribute profits made to share holders (in the non profit world they are called stake holders). But what you are saying is moot. Regardless of how successful a nonprofit is, regardless of how much of an endowment they have paying rent is the cost of operation, not program cost. Thus any dollar you save on rent goes to program cost, or other operation spending. Thus, more of the money you raise can be spent on achieving the nonprofits mission. CC wnet after BM because TK was a big name, and it looked like the Kean name could carry over the relativly unknown BM. Rove did the entire thing, set it all up, gave CC his orders, CC follwed through and the svengali of the GOP is now going to throw CC under the bus to save his own skin.

"Thus, more of the money you

"Thus, more of the money you raise can be spent on achieving the nonprofits mission"

yes it can ... but this is NJ and due to corruption most of it won't. That is the point you miss over and over again in your posts. You do not live in reality. Both Christie and Corzine are both hopelessly corrupt, and so are their cronies.

Russ

Just in case you are having trouble finding a mover. http://www.njmovers.com/

How is JSC Corrupt

For that matter how is Chirsite? Corruption is illegal activity. Corzine has done nothing illegal, and while Christie may in fact have been on the edge. It doesnt seem like evidence can prove it. Sometime politics get shady and brutal, but that doesnt necessarily mean corruption. And it certainly isnt unique to NJ. There are nonprofits that are crooked im sure, but North Hudson appears to be a decent one.

Bottom Line: Christie Certainly APPEARS To Have Violated...

...the spirit if not the letter of the Hatch Act.

Sadly, there won't likely be a prosecution, certainly not in the current climate.....and after he loses the race it's all a fairly moot point.

Christie, as I've been saying here for years is a petty partisan hack who bought his job for $350K.

Pay to play is his claim to fame and his game.

Getting 129 convictions and pleas in NJ in SEVEN YEARS is like finding grains of sand on the beach and thinking that you've accomplished something.

Christie's "lead" is already halved....the hot air balloon is imploding.

LOL

Nick - you are a joke. But thanks for the laugh - at you of course. The Dem poll you cite is a bigger joke than you.
