GOP gubernatorial candidate Christopher Christie today picked Kimberly McFadden Guadagno, the Monmouth County Sheriff and a former federal prosecutor, to run on his ticket for Lt. Governor,  Christie made his announcement on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Click here to view Christie's announcement on YouTube.

"As a Federal Prosecutor and later as the Monmouth County Sheriff, I had to make tough decisions," Guadagno said.  "This is the time in New Jersey's history where we have to make tough decisions, Chris. I am proud to be a part of your team because I know you will face those challenges head on."

Christie and Guadagno willmake a formal announcement today in Asbury Park, followed by a stop at The Reo Diner in Woodbridge.  They will finish the day with a meet and greet at the home of Tana Raymond, a Democratic Councilwoman from Garfield who endorsed Christie last week.

Guadagno, 50, was elected Sheriff in 2007 after holding municipal office in Monmouth Beach, both as a Commissioner and as a 15-year member of the Board of Adjustment.  She also spent fifteen years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, working in both New Jersey and Brooklyn.  Guadagno prosecuted high profile defendants like Essex County Executive Thomas D'Alessio in 1994 and Somerset County Prosecutor Nicholas Bissell in 1995.  Later, she served in state government as the Assistant Director of Criminal Justice at the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety.

Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Guadagno attended Ursinus College and American University Law School, and later worked as a law professor at Rutgers University. Her husband, Michael Guadagno, is also a former Assistant U.S. Attorney who was named Superior Court Judge in 2006.  They have three children between the ages of 8 and 16.

VERY SOLID PICK

Tough, no nonsense ticket....

Marketable Difference

Marketable difference between the professional way that Chris Christie has handled his Lt Governor search vs the way Jon Corzine has handled it.

Christie didn't need public vetting, and had the courage to stand up to all factions of his party.

As usual, Jon Corzine hasn't had the courage of his convictions. He has run every choice through an unnecessary public vetting process, which has been embarrassing to the individuals and disgraceful to his campaign. The people he has run through this gauntlet, have become so desperate, that they have stooped to e-mailing people asking them to vote in web polls.

This process is  symbolic of the Corzine administration--unable to make tough decisions, and FRIGHTENED to upset anyone in his party.

Solid pick

Good pick overall. I also think that Diane Allen, Kathe Donovan, and a few others would be have been good picks as well.  Still, Kim shares a similar background as Chris and has a solid record behind her.

Now let's see what Corzine does. I think Christie's move would make it a bit difficult to pick an "unknown" like Randal Pinkett for LG -- he may have to move towards someone with an actual record.  I'm wondering if that means that Loretta Weinberg or Tahesha Way are now a lock for the position?

Veritas vos Liberabit
"Collecting more taxes than absolutely necessary is legalized robbery." - Calvin Coolidge

Great Pick

Solid and Straightforward. This path to new leadership in Trenton is hitting it's stride. Corzine will now need to confer with Donald Trump to determine how best to establish residency for Annie Duke as quickly as possible.

wise choice

now all Christie has to do is zipp it on Social issues until polling day

This is a solid choice

even though I like the choice I still believe the right choice would have been Kathe Donovan. Bergen is the prize in this election it is the place that Chris has to have so why choose someone outside Bergen. Mrs. Guadagno is a good choice just think Kathe would have been a great choice. This leaves the door open for Corzine who has looked like a clown through this entire process to save some face by choosing Loretta Weinberg.

Ok choice, but a few

Ok choice, but a few concerns: 1) Where's the executive experience? It's nice its a ticket with two former prosecuters but who knows the system well enough to get things done? 2) Name recognition? For Christie to win he needs people to know who he is. Just as its helps to know who your LG. Running as the guy who isn't Corzine only goes so far. 3) Corzine can pick who he wants to take the wind out of Christie's sails, the LG could be the equilizer in this race and Corzine can now even things out depending on who he picks. Christie does the have that Corizine is crashing and burning and it's only July. http://lwschoolhouse.blogspot.com/

Mistake

CC should have picked Donovan.... he needs to win Bergen.  He's already going to win Monmouth.

ashcroft, gonzalez, mukasey, goodling,sampson,rove.....

And if elected.....We will deliver the funds to aid a cash-strapped state into recovery. We are both political allies and personal friends with the Democratic Senators, Congressmen, and the President himself....

good point, gorednj

Corzine has polluted the policitical skyline with trial balloons for months now and still nothing definitive.  He has been running a sort of NJ Idol campaign with some more talented than others hoping to see which garners the most votes/support from any particular member group of the coalition that makes up the Democrat party.

Corzine should pick an LG candidate from his most solid base - unions.  Hell, given the grotesquely exuberant endorsement from NJEA, why not pick Joyce Powell?  What better way to illustrate his supposed attention to education (other than throwing bag loads of money without oversight to the school district hierarchy).

Kim is correct. Young people

Kim is correct. Young people can not afford to stay in New Jersey.

Double-down on Change.

Christie wants to double-down on his message of change and fighting corruption and that's why he selected this woman (it had nothing to do with demographics).

Meanwhile, Corzine's "shortlist" seems to be growing longer and longer every day as he tries to find a LG who can salvage his campaign.

will she give out sweetheart deals like Christie???

fact remains Christie gave out millions in contracts to political cronies. these right wingers like sanford talk a big game -- listen to what I say, not what I do. another blowhard in office. btw -- what exactly will Christie do to lower property taxes???? his vague generalities can only get him so far.

HamiltonJunkie

To use your words: listen to what I say, not what I do? Well, what has Mr. Corzine done to lower our taxes? I remember rather clearly 40 in 4, has he even come close to this? Like the sands in the hour glass these are the last days of Corzine's political life.

This pick

This pick isnt going to swing my vote to CC, but it looks pretty solid on the surface. All things considered CC, handled this better than JSC did. Of course CC's pick is no where near as high profile, and did not come with the political maze that JSC has (which Dem in a Dem state do you pick?), but overall JC seems to have allowed the politics on this get out of hand. He should have handled it the way he handled the 1st budget.

this pick

politician & cop....hmmm, where have I see that before - what lies beneath?

Maybe Timid Jon will nominate 2 LG's?

You mean the budget where Timid Jon shut down the state...raised the sales tax(for debt payment)...then gave 1/2 away...and then allowed the bulk of what was left to be squandered on Christmas Tree items.

Don't let Corzine take credit for eliminating Christmas Tree items, it all stopped when US Attorney Christie started dropping subpeana bombs all over Trenton.

TIMID JON doesn't have the courage of his convictions...he has been ROLLED by the Assembly(led by Roberts), ROLLED by the Senate(Sweeney, Buono, etc) and ROLLED time and again by the Unions.

I'm waiting for him to nominate 2 LG's--so as not to upset anyone--this guy is a joke.

Doesn't matter

It doesn't matter who Chris Christie picked, the bottom line is that his campaign is based on nothing but talk. There are no real plans, nothing concrete, an empty shell is all. We've should have known this from his reaction prior to the primary when all he would do is critique the governor without offering up his own ideas on how to address the issues New Jersey faces. This is a totally empty campaign. It's simply "Hi, I'm not Governor Corzine, vote for me." A waste.

gore

No i mean when JSC went to Trenton stared Codey and Robert (or Norcross) down and said the state's a mess, you will give me a real balanced budget or I will call your bluff and shut down the state. Working people should not ahve been hurt in their wallets bc joe roberts and dick codey failed to do their jobs. The one thing Corzine isnt is timid, I doubt you could find a single timid marine. What Corzine is is a bad politician and that has hurt him some bc frankly I dont think the man has the patience to make every little podunk St. Sen and Assem feel like they are king of the world. Christmas tree items still exist-here's news they always will. Its how business gets done. No one wants any one else but their district to get them. CC didnt put that hammer down.

Guadagno.

Christie wants to play this law enforcement card all the way to the finish line. She's Italian and Catholic. That's good. She's an elected official from a swing county of sorts. That's good. She's not pro-life. That could backfire with the base he refuses to consolidate. Overall, I give the pick a C+. Meeting with Garfield Councilwoman Tana Raymond is really dumb. The Democrats will carry Garfied 2-1 no matter what she says or does. This is really a statement about how little control Sarlo has over the district and how vulnerable Schaer & Scalera have become. Vote Column "A" - All the way!

40% increase in OT in the MC Sheriff's department

under her watch. Excuses as to why it happened? And she'll lower property taxes?

The only person in the '09 race so far who had any direct control over a property-tax based funded budget, and a great management job she did.

They can bash Jon, but can they do better?
