Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire formally withdrew from the race for U.S. Marshal today and endorsed fellow Democrat Tomas Padilla, a Hackensack police captain and Bergen County Freeholder. McGuire, who touted endorsements from U.S. Reps. Steven Rothman (D-Fair Lawn), Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson) and Frank Pallone (D-Long Branch), says he wants to continue his work as Sheriff.
“Upon consulting with my family and friends and after careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that the best interests of the people will be best served by remaining Sheriff of Bergen County,” said McGuire. “In a very short time as Sheriff, my team has been able to enhance the Office, professionalize the staff, and help make Bergen County a safer place for all. I am proud to be Sheriff and feel my work is far from finished.”
“I am humbled by the support of Congressmen Rothman, Pascrell and Pallone as well as national leaders and the community but my heart is in Bergen County. I wish to continue to devote my full attention and efforts into the Sheriff's Office and for the people of Bergen County,” McGuire said.
Former Mercer County Sheriff Samuel Plumeri, who is now the Director of Security for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is also reportedly interested in the post.
Padilla, a Park Ridge resident, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board of Freeholders in 2002. He lost a bid for a full-term in 2003 to Republican Elizabeth Randall, and came back to win a seat in 2004 and 2007.
“I know that the decision to choose the next U.S. Marshal continues in earnest. I believe that the person you choose should possess the talent to build a collaboration between our state's Sheriff's and law enforcement professionals and who possesses the skills to bring a fresh perspective to the Marshal's Office. I believe that New Jersey would be well served by Hackensack PD Captain Tomas Padilla,” said McGuire.
