U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie has launched a probe of ousted CWA Local 1034 President Carla Katz and federal agents served a subpoena at the CWA national headquarters in Washington yesterday, according to a Star-Ledger report. Katz is the former girlfriend of Gov. Jon Corzine, who could face Christie in the 2009 gubernatorial election.

This is just insane.
The man opens up the newspaper every morning and makes prosecutorial decisions based on whatever he reads, or more to the point, whatever Margolin reads to him over the phone.
That this is the opposition party's best shot just goes to show what deep doo-doo this state is in.
Insane is a good word
I am so sure that an "internal investigation" conducted by people who had strong disagreements with her is just as objective as can be. The fact that Christie is following up on this is just ridiculous. Its political infighting at the most basic level - its doesn't merit government review or government resources. And can we puh-lease stop hearing in every story that she's Corzine's ex-girlfriend? Who cares who he used to date, before he became governor. Old news.

It just goes to show that christi's investigations and persecutions are all directed at democrats. won't it be great when a democrat trounces him in the governors election next year.

Let's try a slightly more cynical view, Ivy.
There is one possible, relevant aspect of the Corzine/Katz connection:
Unlike many of the targets of Christie's partisan witchhunts of Democrats (and Republicans with no further political purpose), Carla Katz will be out of work for as long as his investigation drags on.
Bill Lawler ain't cheap.
Katz may be forced to hit up her former beau, Rocco-style, in order to cover the house payments and legal bills.
Just in time for the whole sordid tale to emerge as a campaign issue... accruing to the benefit of... Chris Christie!
That's a bit of a stretch...
...but very creative. Regardless, I think we can agree that truth, justice and the American way are not exactly the underpinnings of this subpoena.
Sniff Sniff
Poor Carla. You guys whine and cry like a five year old girl who had her doll taken away. Christies record of bipartisan convictions proves you all are either scared or ignorant to the facts. Of the 59 convictions (as of March 28), 21 were Republicans, 37 Democrats, and one unidentified affiliation. Doesn't look like he is only going after Democrats to me. And if Carla is innocent - which she is until proven otherwise - then she has nothing to worry about.
First commercial script for Christy
"I'm Chris Christie and I'm running for Governor because I have fought for what it right and ethical in government as your US Attorney. I have tried my darnedest to cut the Democrat party off at the knees to clear a way for me to serve you, the people. I care so deeply that I even implicated the Governor's ex-girlfriend in a false scheme to make sure that you have a Governor that knows how ethics should be manipulated and that your best interests are served. I will be YOUR Governor and the Governor to the Republican party. I am here to do the best job I can for you in a way that I see fit. Yes, it might be self-serving, but I will get the job done. Anyone who stands in my way or says anything negative about me before I take office, well you'll just have to go to jail. That's just the way I roll. I'm Chris Christie and I approved this message."
Naive to the extreme
The comment that if you're innocent you have nothing to worry about shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the judicial system.
Ivy
I agree wholeheartedly. I would add that you're innocent until there is conclusive proof on video, tape recorder, on paper, and there are many witnesses to testify on your behalf. Other than that, you can be found innocent by a jury but that's not how the outside world sees it.
From huntsu...
"Of the 150 people we found who have been investigated, indicted or convicted only 33 are Republicans and 112 are Democrats. Five are unknown.
"We'll do a more in-depth analysis in a later post, but the preliminary review shows that Democrats are 300 percent more likely to be investigated than Republicans, a number far out of whack with the true ratio of party identification or elected officials. Dems are only 175 percent as likely to be convicted."
huntsu
huntsu from bluejersey has been totally discredited. His or her numbers have been proven false. Good try. And if Carla is innocent, she will have nothing to worry about other than a hefty legal bill which Romeo Corzine will take care of. I have a full understanding of the legal system. Too bad your judgement is impaired when it comes to criminal wrongdoing.
Lack of Common Sense
Of course Christie is more likely to investigate Dem's because they control almost everything in this state. Governor? Three straight Dem's. Majority in the Assembly? Dem's. Majority in the Senate? Dem's. Most populated areas in the state like Newark, Camden, Paterson, AC & Trenton? All firmly controlled by Dem's.
It stands to reason that more Dem's would be investigated because there are a lot more them here in NJ. That's common sense!
What I'd like to know is how you guys can attack Christie when his conviction record is so damned good! If Christie were losing in the courtroom, then you'd be justified in questioning his motives. Personally, I think all corrupt officials, regardless of party, should be stopped ASAP! That's more common sense!
"I figure people drift toward liberalism at a young age, and I always hope that they change when they see how the world really is.”

Are those...
...charges from the Dems that the US attorney is engaging in political profiling? I love it... what a bunch of Myrmidons...
Not Party Politics
Republicans don't control anything and usually have somewhat weathly self funders or principal conservatives so we have no access to being corrupt with Union or Govt. coffers.
Morons.
There are not 4 times as many Democratic public officials in the state as Republicans. Give yourselves just a modicum of credit.
Unless Christie Finds A Partisan Prejudiced Judge Appointed by..
...Ronald Reagan or one of the Bush Boys, Ms Katz probably has nothing to worry about.
On the other hand, there isn't even an indictment and this may turn out to be just another "Menendez Moment" for Christie.
Don't get me wrong, if Katz truly is guilty of breaking the law, I have no problem with prosecuting and convicting her; but this all smells so stinking much like politics and self serving propaganda for Christie that it's disgusting.
If there is any real basis to Christie's investigation he should recuse his whole office and hire a truly independent prosecutor with a non partisan back ground (if one exists).
Meanwhile the national CWA has been let off the hook big time; I still don't see how it could possibly be legal to do what they did with zero internal due process....again, this all smells like a corrupt enterprise.
The fact that Katz was advocating for a more muscular approach toward management while the national was caving in sure sounds dirty to me.....that's not what unions are supposed to do.
Their job is to FIGHT for the workers; not kow tow to the bosses. No doubt this will all play out for years and time will tell who is/was telling the truth.
Meanwhile, it's a field day for Republicans, corrupt union officials and misogynists of all stripes.
As I've said here before, if Chris Christie were really serious about fighting corruption in New Jersey he would have instituted RICO investigations and prosecutions of HUNDREDS of government officials at all levels who are involved in what is the ongoing criminal enterprise known as pay to play.
Yes, the individual bribes may be legalized; but if you were to really examine and uncover the nexus of relationships and favors and follow the money it would be clear that there is a criminally corrupt pattern that dictates much if not most of the ways money is spent in New Jersey.
Christie is a self serving parftisan hack who only goes after low hanging fruit and stupid shlubs who were on their way out anyway...mostly Democrats.
Chris Christie will never touch the endemic institutionalized corruption that is the "lifes blood" of NJ politics.

Ahem......
And I quote in full.....

That has to be the biggest lie since "The check is in the mail" and "I am not a crook"! LOL
Don't take my word for it Vin, read what REPUBLICANS are saying!!! http://www.trooc.com/
Sorry Vin, the dirt is bipartisan. Christie Whitman was as much of a corrupt partisan political whore as Joe Fereirro....only she got to keep the white gloves on (at least until 9-11 when the gloves became bloodied with the bits of lung coughed up by victims of the "clean safe air" her corrupt and compromised EPA told people was present after the attacks.)
Maybe what's needed in NJ is a third party that runs on only one issue. 100% clean government and a ZERO tolerance policy for corruption at any level by anyone!!!
I bet that a truly clean NJ would have far far far lower taxes and deliver more and better services....and the cost of all manner of goods and services would go down too.
What the hell does it mean to be a Republican in NJ anyway? This isn't a big state for the battles of "guns, gays and radical religious fundamentalism?
All New Jerseyans, Democrats and Republicans alike, should unite (at least at the level of state and local politics) around cleaning up the systemic corruption.
This whole Katz thing is a big distraction. The PR boys and girls for the rich corporations and pols must be laughing out loud at how easy it is to divert peoples attention fom the deep and profound corruption that permeates NJ and benefits their clients.
