NJN News anchor Kent Manahan will retire after more than thirty years as an anchor and reporter, the New Jersey Network announced today. Manahan, who has won five Emmy Awards, has filed for the state’s retirement incentive, which has specific deadlines of August 1 or a later date, with the potential of an extension until July 2009. Manahan and NJN are seeking an extension to provide for an orderly transition.
Manahan is the second top NJN news employee to retire this month. Bill Jobes, the longtime news director, will leave on July 31.
“Every weekday evening, she provides in-depth coverage of New Jersey as part of NJN News, the only broadcast news program that covers the entire state,” said Elizabeth Christopherson, Executive Director of NJN Public Television & Radio. “She has interviewed presidents, governors, heads of state, legislators, political leaders, entertainers and CEOs, winning numerous Emmys as well as national and international journalism awards for her insightful news reports and documentaries. No matter what her future holds, Kent will always be part of our NJN family.”

Anchorperson AND State Employee
It must be nice to collect a pension from the entity you've been covering in depth all these years. Kinda explains all those softballs she's thrown at State officials all these years. I've always wondered why Michael Aron always has to jump in, interrupt the guests and spout the company line on Reporters Roundtable.
Why is the State of New Jersey in the T.V. business anyway?
Amen
Couldn't have said it better myself. I would say the same thing for mayors and other locally elected officials.
Pension?
There was an article about her in the Ledger last week that said her pension would be over $6k per month. The total annually was over $75,000 annually.
Nice chunk o' change if you can get it, eh?

Kent Manahan well deserves her pension
Kent Manahan is perhaps the best anchor in the NY/NJ market, including the networks. She will be sorely missed by this poster. I have been watching her news reports for many years and she is consistent, professional, unbiased and a great communicator. It is hard to believe that some posters would deny her the pension that she so deserves. I suppose none of you or your family members receive a pension. Kent, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Thank you for bringing important NJ issues into my living room every night with your no nonsense delivery and pleasant demeanor. Enjoy your retirement and pay no mind to the naysayers in this forum.

No one is denying the fact that Ms. Manahan hasn't fulfilled all of the requirements for receiving her pension merited by her 30 years of service to the taxpayers. What some of us (I) are (am) questioning is the propriety of the State of New Jersey being responsible for the dissemination of news in that its reporters, anchors, hosts, etc. are beholden to the State for their livelihoods.
Can you really take someone seriously when he (she) is interviewing the Governor, while in his pocket (her purse) is a pay check signed by the interviewee?
Class Act
Great woman, did a great job, deserves whatever is in the deal she signed.
To the other point raised, it is beyond ridiculous for taxpayers to subsidize television in today's information age.
Another taxpayer rip-off!
That frightening looking woman will now receive a PENSION WITH LIFETIME BENEFITS after practicing a liberal bias her whole career?
Isn't that nice.
BTW, what was her final salary?
$200,000? $250,000?
What will be her pension?
Looks like she spent half her money reconstructing her pathetic looks!
Where's a toilet so I can vomit.

STATE EMPLOYEES?????
We all knew taxpayers help to support NJN but didn't know that NJN's employees were state employees! This is outrageous.
Kent's retirement
Having worked as booth announcer at NJN for
years, I can tell you, Kent is one classy lady!
A professional broadcaster, and not just another talking head, I recall her excellent coverage of the Challenger disaster in '86.
But Kent always displayed professional and personal courtesies whether she was covering a plane crash, or a Senate budget vote!
While her professional on camera performance
has always been outstanding, behind the camera, Kent has always been a great journalist, and a good friend.
God Bless you Kent. Enjoyed working with you
Wish you the absolute best in the future.
She will be a tough act to follow.

NJN, You've Got A Great Anchorwoman On Staff - Use Her!
New Jersey Network has been hammered by budget cutbacks and tragi-comic blunders. But New Jersey Network is a strategic asset for a technological state like NJ. We need NJN and we need it to become better.
Which station is going tell OUR stories? Which station has the potential to be a communications hub for broadcast and online
services? In a few months, the entire state (and the rest of the country) will go digital. Which NJ station can make best use of the new medium to cover our state? New Jersey Network, of course...but it has to make decisions now!
NJN management, you can fix almost everything with one bold action. Get a great anchorperson with years of experience in covering New Jersey. The anchor should have proven experience, not just in news coverage but also in explaining medical and science developments. Those are NJ's two major economic forces empowering our state. NJN needs someone who can handle the job.
Where do you get an anchor like that? Well, Management, go into the NJN TV studio, then don't move a damned inch.
She's right there: Sara Lee Kessler.
She's an award winning journalist (Emmys and more). Her New Jersey medical and science stories are better than anything that NYC television ever churned out. and they are about OUR state. No need to look further!
Sara Lee is great! And, for those who need reminding, she was an anchorperson at Channel 9 in NYC television station before coming to NJN.
