State Sen. Jeff Van Drew says he won’t run for Congress in 2008, making GOP Rep. Frank LoBiondo the clear favorite to win re-election to an eighth term this year, the Vineland Daily Journal is reporting. Possible Democratic challengers to LoBiondo are former Fairfield Mayor Viola Thomas-Hughes, who won 36% against LoBiondo in 2006, and Bridgeton City Councilwoman Celeste Riley.

too bad, but I'm sure he'll run if the seat is ever open.
too soon.
No way around the fact that he just forced people to make the choice to fire Asselta a few months ago. Tough to ask people to do the same again so soon.
If he ever wants to run
If Van Drew ever wants to make a future run for Congress and win the general election for that seat he better vote against Paid Family Leave next week.
disappointed
Here is a golden opportunity for Van Drew to run against LoBiondo: a high turnout year, massive dissatisfaction with national Republican leadership, an increasingly Democratic area, money from the national party, etc. That said, I see the logic behind commonsense's statement about it being too soon for Van Drew to run; then again, the next election is in 2010, and Van Drew runs for state senate in 2011.
I wish Riley or Thomas-Hughes the best in their upset bid, but they will need to campaign full-time and aggressively (one is a schoolteacher) to get their name and message out.
Rep. LoBiondo's seat was
Rep. LoBiondo's seat was 100% safe no matter what happened.

Re-Election Assured
The closest Frank LoBiondo ever came to losing was in 1996, when Ruth Katz got 38% to his 60%.
It is highly unlikely that Van Drew or Thomas-Hughes or whomever is going to defeat LoBiondo.
