CRYAN: 'ABBOTT' DECISION SHOWS LEGISLATURE,
GOVERNOR TOOK RIGHT COURSE ON SCHOOL AID
(TRENTON) - Assemblyman Joseph Cryan today said a nearly 300-page decision by a Superior Court judge tasked with reviewing the state's new school funding formula validates the approach of providing aid to children in every school district, not just a select few.
Superior Court Judge Peter E. Doyne was asked by the Supreme Court to review the school funding formula and make a recommendation. Judge Doyne said the formula ensures "the thorough and efficient education so desperately needed for the development of our youth."
Cryan (D-Union), who chairs the Assembly Education Committee, released the following statement:
"Judge Doyne has validated the approach the Legislature and Governor Corzine took to ensure every child gets the educational help they need, no matter where they live.
"I hope that the state Supreme Court will act quickly to accept Judge Doyne's findings and reiterate the simple truth that with the right tools every child can succeed. Providing every child with a quality education should not just be something called for in a written formula, but something that is backed-up with actual dollars.
"The hope and promise of Abbott rests in ensuring the progress made by kids in the former Abbott districts is not ignored and not allowed to be undone. Providing that vital oversight will continue to be a focus of the Assembly Education Committee."
