BURZICHELLI/MILAM/ALBANO BILL SIGNED INTO LAW;ALLOWS CASINO EMPLOYEES TO SERVE ON A.C. COUNCIL (TRENTON) - Legislation Assemblymen John Burzichelli, Matt Milam and Nelson Albano sponsored to allow casino employees to run for seats on the Atlantic City Council was signed into law Saturday by Gov. Jon S. Corzine."Any fears that could have been voiced about the casino industry seeking to run roughshod over Atlantic City's government have been allayed by the past 30 years of experiences," said Burzichelli (D-Gloucester). "It made no sense to continue a system that blocked residents from seeking to represent their neighbors just because they happened to be a casino waitress or dealer."The new law will allow the more than 8,900 casino employees who live in Atlantic City - nearly one-third of Atlantic City's adult population - to seek seats on the Atlantic City Council. Approximately 33,000 casino employees who live outside of the resort faced no impediments from seeking to serve on their respective towns' governing bodies. "Some of the best ideas for moving Atlantic City forward could come from men and women who were until now blocked from ever being allowed to seek public office," said Milam (D-Cumberland/Atlantic/Cape May). "Their voices and energies will now be welcome at City Hall, not shunned.""Lifting this antiquated prohibition gives final recognition of how the futures of Atlantic City, the casino industry and the men and women who work in the resort are all linked together," said Albano (D-Cumberland/Atlantic/Cape May). The new law allows individuals to run who are employed at a casino prior to seeking office; a prohibition against officeholders taking a new casino job while a member of the governing body remains intact. Council members employed by a casino, or who have immediate family employed by a casino, will be required to consult with the Department of Community Affairs' Local Finance Board to ensure no potential conflicts of interests could arise as a result of their public service. The law also clarifies that the ban on casino licensees contributing to political campaigns will not prohibit a candidate from contributing to his or her own campaign. On the Net: www.assemblydems.com www.youtube.com/user/njassemblydems New Jersey Assembly Democrats on Facebook

“She has already chosen the interests of the insurance industry over the health care needs of working people, she took millions from Wall Street as the economy went into a meltdown, and now she wants to purchase a job in Congress at a time when so many have lost their jobs because of the actions of big bankers and others." -- Monmouth County Democrats spokesman Mike Mangan, on Republican Diane Gooch, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone.
